Can I drink alcohol and still lose fat?
Answered by Nikkiey Stott and her guests · Updated
The short answer
Yes, but how often you drink decides it. On Ep. 359, Nikkiey says one or two intentional occasions a week is something most consistent women can handle while still progressing. Drinking three to four nights a week shows up in your results. In earlier episodes she takes a stricter line and suggests keeping it rare.

The full answer
Nikkiey explains that your body treats alcohol as a toxin and makes clearing it the top priority. While your liver does that, fat burning is paused, not just slowed, and it can stay paused from a few hours to most of the next day. Across Eps. 12, 107 and 166 she adds the other costs: interference with muscle protein synthesis and recovery, hormone disruption, dehydration, less deep sleep, and more calories from the drinks and the hungry morning after.
On Ep. 359 she says a single night is absorbed by a week of solid nutrition and training. Your body is resilient. The trouble is the pattern. Several nights a week, even moderate ones, means fat burning is interrupted again and again, sleep keeps getting disrupted, cortisol keeps rising and you run a steady calorie surplus. She asks you not to talk yourself out of this just because you don't overeat after drinking. The other effects still happen.
The episodes don't fully agree on where the line is. Ep. 359 says one or two strategic occasions a week is workable. On Eps. 107 and 166, Nikkiey says even a drink or two weekly does harm and can slow your results when everything else is on track. On Ep. 12, she says a few drinks every six to 12 months is fine, but regular drinking makes fat loss and muscle gain much harder.
If you want to cut back, she doesn't ask you to quit overnight. On Ep. 166 she suggests:
Her parents took eight months to stop drinking at social occasions. The question to keep asking is whether drinking supports your goals.
- Have one drink instead of four
- Drink plenty of water alongside it
- Have a little less each time and phase it out slowly

Holidays, Travel & Social Life
What should I do after overeating on a holiday?
Get back to your normal routine right away, without guilt or punishment. Nikkiey's advice: hydrate, move your body, eat your next solid balanced meal built around lean protein, and hit your workouts as planned. Don't slash calories, skip meals or try to burn it off with a three-hour gym session. That approach only keeps the spiral going.

Holidays, Travel & Social Life
Will one holiday weekend ruin my progress?
No. Nikkiey says one plate, one event, or even a whole weekend won't erase the progress you've built. The scale jump afterward is mostly water, salt, sugar, alcohol and poor sleep, not fat. What actually sets you back is the story that follows: I blew it, I'll start again Monday.

Holidays, Travel & Social Life
How do I stay on track during the holidays?
Set a floor you won't drop below, and treat each holiday as one day, not a whole season. Nikkiey suggests keeping one to three minimums, such as protein at every meal, water, 8,000 to 10,000 steps or three strength workouts a week. Then get right back to your routine the next morning instead of waiting for January.
