If you keep getting in your own way with your workouts and your food, this episode is for you. A listener asked Nikkiey Stott on Instagram for her favorite books on habits and getting the results you want, and she answered with three. None of them are fitness books. All of them are about mindset, which Nikkiey sees as one of the most important parts of any fitness journey. If you live in the energy of 'I can't,' surrounded by excuses and a victim mentality, you will self-sabotage at the gym and at the table.

Nikkiey frames the episode around one idea: you can't mimic greatness, you have to calibrate your own internal meter for greatness. Nobody else can do that for you, not your husband, your friends or even a coach. The people around you still matter, and she points to the WarriorBabe community as an example of women with a can-do attitude lifting each other up.

Her three picks, in the order she says to read them: You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero, for self-awareness and for ignoring other people's opinions. Atomic Habits by James Clear, for breaking bad habits and building small daily routines that compound over months and years. The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest, a deeper read on the old stories and limiting beliefs that stand between you and the person you want to become.

Key takeaways

  • Mindset comes first, because if you stay in an 'I can't' state full of excuses and victim thinking, you will self-sabotage your training and your eating.
  • Your internal meter for greatness is something only you can build, and it rises when you keep doing the right things consistently over weeks, not just once.
  • The people you spend the most time with shape you, so surround yourself with doers who take their journey seriously instead of non-doers.
  • Read the books in order: You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero, then Atomic Habits by James Clear, then The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest.
  • Becoming self-aware and taking responsibility is the first step, because if you keep blaming external things, they will keep controlling you.
  • Don't expect change in seven days; small, incremental daily routines compound into real change over six months, a year, two years and beyond.
  • Old stories, like the dieting lifestyle you watched your mom live, belong to your past and don't serve the healthier, stronger version of you that you're working to become.
  • A coach can hold you accountable, but you are the one who has to do the work that supports who you want to become.

Questions answered

What books does Nikkiey Stott recommend for mindset on a fitness journey?

She recommends You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero, Atomic Habits by James Clear and The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest. She says to read them in that order.

Why does mindset matter for fat loss and fitness?

Nikkiey explains that if you stay in a low-energy state of 'I can't,' with excuses and a victim mentality, you will self-sabotage and find it much harder to go to the gym and eat the right foods. Shifting your mindset helps you believe you can do it.

What is an internal meter for greatness?

It comes from a passage Nikkiey read: the goal is not to mimic greatness but to calibrate your internal meter for greatness so you make better choices. She says only you can work on it, by doing the right things consistently over weeks, though the people and environment around you can raise or lower it.

How does Atomic Habits help with fitness results?

Nikkiey describes it as a guide to breaking bad habits and adopting good ones in four specific steps. It shows how small daily routines compound into big change over months and years, rather than the seven-day change many people hope for.

Why read The Mountain Is You last?

Nikkiey says it's deeper and more advanced, and the first two books help prime you for it. It focuses on the block between where you are now and the life you want, including the stories and limiting beliefs from your past.

This book helps you become self-aware. And that is the first step that you have to take when you are making a transition for yourself to greater things. You have to be self-aware. Because if you're not self-aware, all of the external things that you are blaming or being a victim to are just going to control you.

What's up, you guys? Welcome back to The WarriorBabe Show. Or if this is one of your first episodes, welcome to the show with Nikkiey Stott, co-founder of WarriorBabe. On this podcast, we talk about mindset, methodologies, and tactics that will help you lose body fat, build muscle, be strong, and feel insanely confident.

I am your host, Nikkiey Stott, and welcome to episode number 73. I put the questions box on my Instagram story so I could answer your questions on the podcast, and I was asked: what are my top favorite books that I have read that can help with habits and getting to where you want to be with your life and the results you're seeking when it comes to your fitness journey?

While these books I'm going to share with you are totally mindset, I think that mindset is one of the most important things, guys, when it comes to your fitness journey. If you are forever in the state and energy of "I can't do this," and you're sitting in a low vibration of all of the excuses and the victim mentality, you won't get where you want to be. Your journey is going to be so much harder when it comes to taking action and going to the gym and eating the right foods.

You will self-sabotage in so many ways if you are sitting in that low vibration and that low energy of "I can't," okay? So if you just switch your mindset, and these books are going to dramatically help you in that sense, they may not have any relation to fitness, but they can help you so much to frame your mindset in a way of "I can do this." And to believe in yourself a little bit more than you would if you're in a low vibration state or a low energy state.

These books can help you when you read words that you feel, and that you know to be what you can be. Oh my God, guys, it's an absolute game changer for helping your brain formulate thoughts and visions of what you can do and what you are capable of doing. It's an absolute game changer. So take this podcast, write down these books, go to Amazon, get these books and take them seriously.

Especially if you're somebody who self-sabotages and gets in your own way. Look, I was listening to another new book, which maybe I'll share in the future. It's a little bit more advanced, but I was listening to it in the car today. Actually, let me just read you what it said, because this will help me frame the rest of the podcast and these books I'm going to share with you. It was: "The objective is not to learn to mimic greatness, but to calibrate your internal meter for greatness."

"So we can better make the thousands of choices that ultimately lead to our great work." Right? So when you work on your own internal meter of greatness, so many things in your world will positively affect what you want to accomplish for yourself. So many things will come easier. The words that you say, the actions that you take, the way you lead yourself to go and do the things that you know you need to do will come from an internal meter of greatness, which only you are able to work on.

It's not going to come externally from your husband or from your friends. Now, the conversations and things you're in on a daily basis, with your friends or with what you're eating or what you're drinking, those will positively or negatively impact your internal meter for greatness. So the low vibrations, the low energy, the people surrounding you, like friends who aren't taking their journey seriously, can really impact that internal meter of greatness.

You're not going to have a high internal meter of greatness if all the things surrounding you are having a negative experience, or are the opposite of what you want to be doing for yourself. If you are surrounding yourself with non-doers, you are going to be a non-doer. The five people you hang out with the most, that is you.

Hey, guys, I love so much that you're listening to this podcast. If you ever want the video version of this, which usually has more effects and all that good stuff for those of you who are visual learners, check out the WarriorBabe YouTube channel. Either way, keep enjoying the show.

But on the flip side, if you're having conversations with your friends where... what I love to use as an example is the community of WarriorBabe, man. These women are going at it and doing what they're all collectively trying to work towards. The collective is working towards becoming healthier and stronger versions of themselves, regaining their personal power, and feeling confident in their skin.

When you're surrounded by that, your internal meter of greatness is going to lean more positively towards what you are trying to accomplish with your fitness goals. When you have women that have a can-do attitude, guess what? You're going to have a can-do attitude. But it starts with you. It starts with you. And then these external factors can start to play a factor in that way. But you have to be the one that does the work. You can't mimic greatness.

You can't pretend, like, "Oh, I'm great because I did this today." But did you do that consistently over weeks on end? That's you increasing your internal meter for greatness. So that was just a little rant on what I mean by mindset. You have to have your mindset on board in a supportive way in order for you to go take the actions you want and then follow through on the results you want to achieve. It has to be supportive. It cannot be non-supportive.

I just elaborated on that. So write down these books, go to Amazon and order them. I hope they positively impact you the way they have for me. These books have been absolutely game changing for me. I've read them multiple times. And the first book I'm going to share with you is what our coaches just read and what we're having our VIP community start reading for a challenge in July. The first book is You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero.

Oh, man, guys, this is one of the first books I read when I was transitioning from a non-supportive mentality, from all of the excuses and a victim state, to wanting to be better and wanting to have an "I can do this," supportive mentality. This is one of the first books I read, and it was an absolute game changer for me during that time. This book helps you become self-aware.

And that is the first step that you have to take when you are making a transition for yourself to greater things. You have to be self-aware, because if you're not self-aware, all of the external things that you are blaming or being a victim to are just going to control you. And when you become self-aware and you take responsibility and take action, and know that it's not the external, it's you, it's like your world flips.

So this book will help you become more self-aware. It will help you figure out what you want in life, and it'll help you become a stronger version of yourself to take action and figure out what you want to do, what you want with your physical body, what you want with your fitness results. Then it'll help you summon the guts to not worry about the how, not worry about how you're going to get it done. Just know you want it so bad that you're going to take all of the action and figure it out along the way.

It's also going to help you kick others' opinions to the freaking curb. I've talked about this in previous podcasts: opinions are the cheapest commodities on Earth. All the people around you, especially the ones sitting in that low vibration state, are going to have all the opinions when you're trying to flip over to the other side, the good side. This book will help you kick all of that shit to the curb and not let it affect you as you go through this evolutionary process to become bigger and better, focus on a healthy lifestyle for yourself, and focus on the one thing that will make you happy, which is you.

And that's how you are a badass. All the things I just said right there. So that's the first book. I would read these in the order I'm saying them, you guys. Read that one first. You can read the physical book or get the audiobook, however you like to consume it. I highly recommend you read it and then read the other two as well. This can be your summer reading. The second one is Atomic Habits by James Clear.

I have made all my clients read this. I have read it multiple times. I've listened to it on audio. I've consumed it in multiple different ways just so I could seriously absorb the hell out of it, and I gained so much from this book. This book is a definitive guide to breaking bad behaviors. The reason you are not where you want to be is because you have all of these bad behaviors, all of these bad habits.

The behaviors turn into habits that are not supporting you to where you want to go. And this book will help you adopt the good ones in four specific steps. It will show you how small, incremental, everyday routines compound into massive positive change over time. A lot of you, in the day to day right now, are hoping to see some change in seven days. Well, guess what?

That's not going to happen. That's not realistic. But if you understand how small, incremental, everyday routines, done consistently over time, compound into massive positive change in six months, one year, 18 months, two years, eight years... So that's book number two. Book number three was actually a recent read for me, in the last year and a half or so. It's called The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest.

This one is a little bit more advanced. Get through the other two first, because they're going to help prime you for this book. The Mountain Is You is deep. It focuses on the block between you and the life that you want to live. So there's where you are right now. I said this in episode four, "Who Are You Working to Become?" Along the way, you will self-sabotage. You will get in your own way. You have blocks that will keep you from the results you want for yourself.

And I'm going to say, in your fitness journey, there's you right now and there's the you that you want to become. This book focuses on the block between you and where you are trying to go. In this book, Brianna Wiest explains how the imperfections, the experiences, the insecurities and the hardships that you've faced so far built up over time and formed your personal challenge that you must overcome in order to grow. And when I say victim, I mainly mean the stories and narratives, the limiting beliefs you've been telling yourself to date that honestly just do not serve you.

They only serve your past. And the past... what I just said is already in the past. Your past happens so quickly. And these things that happened to you in the past, these stories you're holding on to, or the blame you're placing externally on people and things and circumstances, they don't serve the healthy, fit you that you want to become. The way you watched your mom grow up with the dieting lifestyle she led is just a part of your story.

It's a belief that you have held through time, and it doesn't serve you right now. It's a part of your past. So this book will help you focus on those things you have built up over time that have become a personal challenge for you to break through. And you have to break through those things and become more self-aware of them in order to get to where you want to be, living your best life as a healthier, fitter and stronger version of yourself.

The best version of yourself. Okay, so these books are so good, you guys. They're so freaking good. Again: You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero. Atomic Habits by James Clear. And The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest. Read them in that order. If you feel like you self-sabotage, if you feel like you're in this state consistently and constantly over time and you just can't move forward toward the results you want for yourself, it's you.

And you have to break through these things, and these books will help you do that. Okay? Coaches will help hold you accountable. But at the end of the day, you are the one that works on your internal meter for greatness by doing all of the things that support who you want to become. So I hope this podcast helped you guys. I hope you enjoy these books. Like I said, they're absolute game changers for your mindset as you embark on your fitness journey, or even as you continue on your fitness journey.

Even if you're 10 years in and you still self-sabotage, read these books. Hope you guys enjoy, and I'll see you in the next podcast.
