How to Stop Wishing and Take Action on Your Fitness Goals

In this episode

Envisioning who you want to become and knowing your why both matter. On their own, though, they are passive. In this episode Nikkiey Stott connects episode 4 (who you want to become) and episode 40 (establishing your why) to the step that actually changes things: pursuit. Wishing, longing and vision boards give you energy. That energy only turns into results when you act on it.

Nikkiey's point is simple. You close the gap between where you are and where you want to be by behaving like the woman you see in your head, right now. Ask what she eats, whether she meal preps, how she handles travel and nights out with friends, and when she says no. Then do those things. She shares her own turnaround from 2015, a hallway conversation with a neighbor who had excuse after excuse, and her field hockey days playing midfield to explain why you have to play offense in your own life.

She also covers why so many women wish, try for a week, decide it isn't working and go back to wanting. Her answer is to treat failure as information, stop fearing what success might look like, and trust your own actions. Her one ask: don't just wait for the next episode to motivate you. Go do something with what you heard today.

Key takeaways

  • Envisioning your goal and knowing your why are passive mental states, and they only produce results when you back them with action.
  • Look at what you have already achieved, like a job, a family, a house or a race, and notice that positive action is what got you there.
  • Shorten the distance to your goal by behaving like the woman you want to become right now, down to how she meal preps, travels, socializes and says no.
  • You can't keep eating the same way and behaving the same way and expect a different body, so change the habits that aren't supporting you.
  • If you try something for a week and it doesn't work, treat that failure as a chance to learn and adjust instead of a sign the goal can't be yours.
  • When you catch yourself saying 'I wish' or 'I want,' ask yourself what action you are actually taking.
  • Play offense in your own life instead of a defensive stance full of excuses that blocks you from your own goal.
  • Don't be afraid of success or overthink what happens next; stay present, take action today and adjust if it fails.

Questions answered

Why isn't visualizing my goal body enough to change it?

Nikkiey explains that envisioning, wishing and having a why are passive mental states. They give you energy, but that energy has to be delivered through action before anything shows up in your body or your health.

How do I close the gap between where I am and the body I want?

According to Nikkiey, you close it by behaving like the person you see in your head right now. Think about how she eats, whether she meal preps, how she handles travel and nights out, and when she says no, then act the same way.

What should I do if I tried something and it didn't work?

Nikkiey says most people take action for a week, decide it isn't working and go back to wishing. She treats failure as an opportunity to learn, switch something up and keep going.

What does playing offense mean for my fitness goals?

Nikkiey compares excuses to playing defense, where you just stand there and end up blocking your own goal. Playing offense means actively moving, acting and driving toward what you want.

Why are some women afraid to go after their goals?

Nikkiey says people are often afraid of success and of failing. She points out that if you're unhappy with where you are, success will feel good, so stay present and take action now.

Nikkiey: The way that you shorten the distance between you and your desired objective is by behaving like that person you see in your brain, and taking action the way that person would take action as you see in your brain.

Yo, yo, yo, what's up, you guys? Welcome back to The WarriorBabe Show with Nikkiey Stott, co-founder of WarriorBabe. On this podcast, I talk about mindset, methodologies, tactics, and all the things that will help you lose body fat, build muscle, be strong, and feel insanely confident.

I am your host, Nikkiey Stott, and welcome to episode number 41, all about trusting in the power of pursuit. If you have not listened to Monday's episode yet, where I talked about establishing your why, it's really important to listen to that episode. And at some point, listen to episode four, which talks about who you want to become. Because episode four, episode 40, and today's episode really marry together in helping you trust in the power of pursuit a little bit more.

Wishing and thinking about who you want to become is really a passive exercise that you're doing mentally. You're envisioning the person you're trying to become, the achievements of that person, the goals you want to accomplish. Then having your why behind that is an energy force. It puts the mental energy in your brain and starts making you want to take action. Today is about marrying those two mental activities, envisioning who you want to become and establishing your why, and turning them into the power of pursuit.

And then, most importantly, trusting in that pursuit you're on to become the person you want to become, and in why you want to become that person. All of the goals you want to achieve, building muscle, losing body fat, getting stronger, being more confident within yourself, have to involve you taking action. I know I've talked about it numerous times in podcasts before, but if you could just get "action" tattooed on your wrist, or write "action" in permanent marker on your hand: action is your best friend.

You can have all of these thoughts, all of these visions. You could have your why, your kids, the why you established if you listened to Monday's podcast. You could have all of those things, but they won't come to fruition. They won't be part of your reality until they are actually pursued, and being pursued means you taking action. When you do that, the world around you behaves so much differently, when you actually take action to go after what you want.

Think of it like this. Think about the things you have achieved up until this point. Maybe you've already gotten to your goal, or to some point of a goal you wanted for your body. Maybe it's a body fat percentage, or maybe you've run a marathon before. Maybe it's the job you have today. All of those are things you decided to go for. Up until this point, any of those examples are things you decided to go after, decided to achieve, like the job you have.

You put work into doing that. You took action to do it. Running a marathon, you trained for it. A goal you've already accomplished, you put action toward it. Positive action is what got you those things. And maybe there are other examples I'm not sharing, but think for a second: what have you achieved up until today? Maybe it's outside of the body you want. It's the job. It's the kids. It's the marriage. It's the family.

It's the house. You put action into doing those things, you guys. Positive action is what got you them. The thing is, what I talked about with the mental activity of becoming who you want to become and establishing your why, that's kind of like wishing, longing, wanting, envisioning, desiring. Those are not the same as pursuing your goals. Those are mental states. They're fun.

They play an important role in the process of getting to and achieving your goal, but they're essentially passive. They're mental states, activities you go off and envision in your brain. You think about this, or you make vision boards. It's all passive. It's all things in the future that you're envisioning for yourself, and then your want, or your why, is why you want to pursue those things. But they're mental states. They give you energy, but that energy then has to be embodied and delivered through action.

There are so many people, and I'm sure you can think of this in yourself or in your friends and family, who just wish they had a better body, or wish they had better health, or want to achieve losing 10% body fat. They want to become more toned, especially with summer coming up. "Oh, I want to look good in a bathing suit." These are all just things in their brain. They see this body in a bikini, and then they probably see their body now.

And then they're not as motivated to take action because they feel like summer's coming up really fast. But if you can switch that in your brain to seeing a more physically fit, healthy body, that's step one: becoming who you want to become. And obviously all of that is backed by health too, having better health for yourself. Then you establish a why. Maybe you want to feel more confident, or you want your kids to see you pursuing this goal so they're inspired to do those things later in life.

And trust me, you guys, they're watching you. I have younger siblings. My brother has watched me compete since 2015 and is now doing all of the things to put himself in alignment, on a better trajectory for building more muscle and being more physically fit and healthy. I like to pride myself that I'm a role model in that. But anyway, those kids are watching you. So those are all mental states. You're envisioning a bikini body. You need to switch it and see a more physically fit body, because obviously that's not where you are right now.

But you can be there in your brain, and then you have your why behind it. Those are all mental states. Yes, like I said, they play an important role in the process of becoming and achieving your goal. But they are essentially passive. You could just sit on your couch and think about all of these things. Pursuit, on the other hand, you guys, is active. Pursuing the goal you're envisioning in your brain is active. Reaching for your goal is behaving like the person you want to become.

If you're not yet in the state you're envisioning, maybe you're overweight and feeling self-conscious about your body, or you're not happy with where you are, you have to behave differently to achieve a physically fit body. You can't be eating shit food and think you're going to achieve the vision in your brain of who you want to become. You have to behave differently.

You can't eat shit food and behave the same way and get where you want to be in your brain. It's not possible. What's that definition from Einstein? Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. You can't eat shit food and then become physically fit. Maybe at some point down the road you can get away with being a little more lenient with your diet. But at the beginning, right here and right now, you have to change a lot of habits that aren't supporting you. In other words, you have to behave in a different way. Reaching for your goal is behaving in a different way.

It's moving in a different way. It's taking action. And doing those things, behaving and moving, shortens the distance between you and your desired objective.

Hey, I just want to drop a huge appreciation to you guys listening to the show. It means a lot. I hope you're enjoying it, and there's so much more to come. If you are enjoying it, hit the subscribe button. I'd appreciate that tons, and it would help this podcast reach others who need to hear these messages too. Thanks so much, guys. Let's get back to the show.

So in episode four I spoke about who you want to become and who you want to be. You have that vision in your mind, but you're here now. The way you shorten the distance between you and your desired objective is by behaving like the person you see in your brain, and taking action the way that person would take action as you see in your brain. It's mind-blowing, but so many people aren't self-aware that they are literally in control.

You literally have the control to close that gap and shorten the distance between you and your desired state. But you have to think about who you want to become. You have to have the why behind it, because the why is everything, which I talked about on Monday. And then you have to take the action, and that's today. That's why I'm saying you have to marry episode four, episode 40, and today's episode, episode 41, together. Step one is thinking about who you're going to become. What is that person doing? What is that person saying?

How is she acting on a daily basis? What is she wearing? What do her gym clothes look like on her? Does she look bomb? Hell yeah. Okay, so then you need to start behaving like her. Is she meal prepping on a Sunday or a Wednesday? Is she making better decisions when she's traveling or going out with her friends? Is she saying no to situations? Think about that. How is that person achieving that goal? Then you shorten the distance by acting like her right now, in the present. It's as easy as I'm saying it.

And I'm saying that with a lot of energy behind it because that was me in 2015. I had this vision. I wanted it. I had a why behind it. And then I pursued it, and I did it super fast. When I had the help of somebody professional and knowledgeable in the things I wanted to accomplish, I shortened the distance big time. What made me struggle for a long time was not knowing what I was doing, bouncing off the walls and wanting to bash my head into a wall. I was trying all of these things and it wasn't working.

Episode one is all about my story, if you want to listen to that. But anyway, that's the big thing I want you to know. Trusting the power of the pursuit means that if you have this vision and you have the why, then trust yourself to go pursue what you're envisioning. And the way you're going to do that, and shorten the distance to your desired objective, is action. The thing is, most people confuse "I want a better body" or "I wish I looked this way" with pursuing.

People confuse "I want this" and "I wish that" with actually pursuing it. Their desire for a goal might be super deep. But when the desire fails to produce, well, everyone wants and everyone thinks, and then they just sit back on the couch and think about all of the passive stuff. And when it fails to produce, they think they can't get that goal, that it cannot be theirs. So all people do is want, want, want.

Or maybe they have tried to take action and it failed. Like I talked about in an earlier episode, failure is just an opportunity to learn and get better. But most people fail and they stop. They want, they wish, they take action for a week, think it's not working, and decide that goal cannot be theirs. So they keep wanting and wishing. It's all mental, and they don't put the action behind it because they're afraid of failing again. If that's you, definitely go listen to that earlier episode on failure. I forget the exact title, I think it's something like embracing failure.

I would highly recommend that one as well, especially if mindset is something you have to work on. Because if you can't get your mind right to pursue the goals you want, you're going to be wanting and wishing all the time. These episodes I'm dropping here, four, 40, the one about failure, and today, are packed with tons of value. And it's up to you to take what I'm saying in those episodes and actually pursue and take action. Okay? For all of those people, it's all mental.

Wish, want, fail, keep wishing, keep wanting, don't think they can achieve it. And guys, I always, always, always say, and you know the saying, actions speak louder than words. So when anybody says to me, "I wish I had this" or "I want this," I'm like, what action are you taking? Sometimes I will literally be that blunt and direct, because it creates a pattern interrupt. Maybe I'll say this to my family, or to my close friends, or to people I go dog walking with.

Or this woman who came up to me. This is a great story. It was really warm here a couple weeks ago, and I was walking Maverick. I came inside and she said, "Oh man, I wish I had a body like yours." And I said, "You can." And she said, "No, I can't." I forget exactly, I put it on my story, but she said, "Just walking to the exercise room exhausts me." And I said, "That's a start."

And then it was excuse after excuse after excuse. But you know what I mean? She wanted this, and I said, "You can do it." Maybe not so much looking like me, but you can still do it. She was overweight, and clearly if walking to the exercise room exhausts her, she could just keep doing that daily, daily, daily. Then she would probably get a little bit healthier and build a little more cardiovascular energy and endurance to pursue her goals. You can do it. You just have to get the fuck out of your own way.

And the way you do that is remembering actions speak louder than words. You say "I want this," but you're not doing the things. Guys, if that's you, wishing and wanting all of these things but not doing the things, what the hell? Actions speak louder than words. I want this body. Cool, what are you doing about it? I wish I had this health. Cool, what are you doing about it? Are you eating shit and drinking alcohol every week? Or are you actually saying no to alcohol, drinking a lot of water and getting quality sleep?

That's action. Actions speak way louder than words, you guys. I stand behind that so much, and I believe in it so much because I've seen women turn their whole health trajectory around by taking supporting action instead of wishing, wanting and hoping. Pursuit is what makes all the difference. Action is what makes all the difference. Actively reaching for what you want alters the odds of getting what you want, immediately and drastically.

The goals you want require you to be on the offense of your own team. You can't achieve what you want from a defensive posture, you guys. I feel like that woman was defensive. She had all the excuses, excuse after excuse after excuse. You may have excuse after excuse where you're playing defense. If your goals require you to be on the offense of your team, running through the defense, you can't remain in a passive stance and make any goal achievable.

You can't remain on the defense. Think about it if you played sports. The defense usually just kind of stands there, and when the offense comes, they block everything coming to get to the goal. So you're just blocking yourself from getting to the goal. I know there's the other team and all of that, but think about it like this: you're blocking the goal you're trying to get to. You have to be on the offense, and you have to power through the defense to get to that goal.

So you can't remain passive. When I played field hockey, and that's what's coming to my brain right now as I share this analogy, I fucking hated playing defense. I never played defense. I was a middie. You know what a middie is? It's the one on the field running all over the place, trying to get to the ball and get it into the goal. That's how you have to be. You have to think about it like that. You have to play offense for what you want in your own life, be on your own team, and drive toward that goal.

You have to move. You have to act. You have to do. You have to behave as your goal. You have to place trust, and this is where it comes in: trust in the power of pursuit. You have to trust in your own action. For a lot of people that's scary, because people are afraid of success. What does success look like? What if I fail? Guys, nothing can be worse for you than where you are right now. If you're not happy right now and you're struggling to get where you want to be with yourself, your body, and your health, success will feel good.

You will feel so much better about yourself, which is all that matters, you guys. You. You're doing this for you. You'll be so proud of yourself, and you'll be so much further along, in a better way, than where you are right now. So don't be afraid of success and what it looks like. Don't think out into the future about what happens when X, Y, and Z. Be present now and take the action you want. Then if you fail, learn from it. It's just an opportunity to switch something up.

Okay? That is all I've got to say on trusting in the power of pursuit, you guys. I want you to marry episode four, episode 40 and today. And if you need it, listen to the episode on failure, I forget what number that is. Listen to those three or four episodes, because I guarantee it's maybe an hour, an hour and a half max. Dude, just by putting in that hour and a half, the value payoff for you is huge.

That's if you start taking action the way I'm sharing with you in the podcast. And that's all I ask you guys to do, by the way. You listen to this podcast. What are you doing afterward? Are you taking the action? Or are you just waiting for the next podcast to release, for me to hype you up and get you motivated? All I ask of this podcast is that you take what I'm sharing with you and do something about it. So go do something about it today.

Real quick: the only ask I could ever have of you guys is to help spread the word so we can help more women lose body fat, build muscle, reach their goals and feel insanely confident. The only way we can do that is if you rate, review and share this podcast. So the single thing I ask you to do is leave a review. It will take you 10 seconds, and it will mean the absolute world to me and may change the world of someone else.
