Full transcript
00:00I turned 40. I gained 40 pounds just kind of out of nowhere. I was still working out. I was still trying to eat, you know, healthy or, you know, nothing was coming off and nothing was working. I almost feel like I'm wearing like a bodysuit, but that's not mine. Really what I was like, I need help. You're down how many pounds now? Somewhere. I'm in the 17, 18, somewhere in there with WarriorBabe. Feeling better, eating better, working out better. I'm a better mom, a better wife, and I'm able to be there more emotionally and physically for them, which is invaluable, right?
00:30It's very invaluable. Hey, everyone. What's going on? Welcome back to another WarriorBabe interview. And today I'm really excited because I have Krista here with me. And despite what she did prior to finding WarriorBabe, she's working out. She was trying to get healthy. She was exhausted, overtraining, stuck in the mindset that the scale was the only thing that mattered. She gained 40 pounds, but she knew deep down that she needed a change. She needed the right direction and she found us.
01:04And today what we're going to dive into is how she's now down 17 pounds, has more energy than ever, and has completely rewired her relationship with fitness and food. And I'm really excited to dive into her story. So Krista, welcome. Hello. Thank you. Yeah. So I'm really excited to get into you sharing with us what was your situation with health and fitness before you found WarriorBabe? So with health and fitness, after I had my second child, I was like, okay, I need to really just start being active because, you know, I just, I need to have more energy.
01:34I've got, you know, one kid and then a toddler, you know, baby. And then I was like, I need to start getting back into fitness. And so that's when I started just really pushing myself to start working out regularly. And it, you know, it took a few months to kind of really get into a good habit of it. I started, you know, doing like those at-home, you know, workouts and just really started to do that. And then I guess that's been, it's been 10 years now that I've just really been kind of working out and doing my thing. And since then, I also had another child. That's kind of where I was really kind of more like restricting calories, more like 1200 calories to try to like really cut weight.
02:09And, you know, I had no idea. Growing up, I didn't really have a good example of like how to eat well. We're just going to eat whatever. But of course, it was a situation where I could eat whatever I want and I didn't gain any weight. Yeah. Which made it hard as an adult to then know how to fuel my body properly. You were saying that you're working out and you weren't eating horribly. What made it frustrating to see that your body changing like in an opposite direction because you started to gain weight? I guess what happens is I turned 40 and my check engine light came on.
02:40So all the things were happening. I gained like 40 pounds just kind of out of nowhere. And like I was still working out. I wasn't eating like, you know, really bad. It wasn't like I went on some crazy, you know, food bend or I was doing all of the same things I kind of had been doing. I just I gained all this weight really fast and it freaked me out. But I was also dealing with kind of like, you know, brain fog and I was tired and I wasn't really sure what to do. So I did kind of go to my doctor and have like the hormones because I was like, well, I'm 40.
03:11So I should probably get like the hormone things checked out. So I did that and my testosterone was really low. So then once I kind of started those treatments like that brain fog lifted, I had more energy. I felt more like, you know, a person again. Once I kind of got to that point, it was like, OK, I need to do something now that I feel a little bit better than I was like, I got to do something else. Because what I've been doing, it's just not working. Was that like a wake up call for you when like you mentioned the check engine light was on? Was that like, I got to figure this out.
03:42Like this ain't right. Yeah. Well, it was crazy because, you know, the first kid who was 14, by the way, my first is 14. I lost, you know, the weight after having him. And then my second one came along and I lost most of the weight. But then number three came along and I lost none. Like not one pound came off. Her body weight came out of my body and that was it. At that point, she's eight now. I was over 200 pounds and I am 5'3". So that was a lot of weight for my little body. And I'd never in my life been that big. And so I did lose that weight and I got back down.
04:16I actually ended up getting back into like the 140s over time. You know, it took a good year of that. And so then I had kind of been hanging out in 140s, 150s area for a while. And I was comfortable with that. I was still kind of doing my thing. And then really, it was just like, I don't know what happened. And I turned 40 and my body said, just kidding. We're done. And so that's when, yeah. Yeah. And so I was like, okay, let's figure this out. And then I was still working out. I was still trying to eat, you know, healthy or, you know, whatever.
04:47But it was not, nothing was coming off and nothing was working. That's frustrating. It's really what I was like. I need help. I need help, clearly. Yeah. That can feel really frustrating when you think you're doing all the right things, but you're not seeing the results that you want. Being a mom of three and you were trying to like navigate this, like, you know, you're a go-getter, you know, you're determined to figure out how to get the results that you want, but it was more so just getting the help that you needed, that you didn't know you needed until you found. Right. Where did you find us? Like, where did you first discover us? So I was trying to remember exactly.
05:17It was either like Facebook or Instagram, but it was, it was one of the ads. It was you talking about helping women and women over 40 and, you know, women in menopause and all this kind of stuff. And I was like, okay, like, I know that, you know, women, our bodies are crazy anyway, but like in menopause and going through changes like that, because I'm, I'm not in menopause, but like, you know, I'm heading that direction. And obviously there was something going on with my body. Right. So maybe these people like have it figured out. Maybe they can help me get this part of my life, you know, the season of my life figured
05:50out and help me, you know, figure this whole thing out. Yeah. Oh, awesome. Well, I love that that stood out to you the most. Was it anything like brought to your attention that I'm not in my forties, but I'm helping women in the forties and the fifties? I, well, I did. I thought that was really interesting. I was like, okay, well, she definitely doesn't look like she's in her forties. If she does, she looks amazing. But I was seeing all the pictures and stuff because, you know, I think there was like some pictures of other women and all that kind of stuff, you know, before and afters.
06:21And I was like, okay, like these women are doing it. I was like, maybe they can help me get this figured out too. It was, that was really funny to me. I was like, she doesn't look that old. Yeah. I mean, I've seen all these pictures on here of women's before and afters that definitely look like they're older than me. And I was like, okay, maybe they've got this figured out. Yeah. So that was that like the deciding factor that made you feel like that this was worth trying with seeing like other people had results that you wanted to have. Yeah. I was like, okay, these older women are seeing results. I was like, maybe it's not like a, it's never too late, you know, it's never too late to start
06:55fitness. It's never too late to start really changing your body. And I was really nervous about it. I think that I was like, okay, I'll just schedule the call. And I do remember being really nervous leading up to that phone call because I, you know, you get nervous about unknown, right? Like, I don't know what this is going to be. I don't know if this is just a gimmick or what. Sure. Yeah, absolutely. I was talking to a friend yesterday and you'll probably resonate. She's like, I just feel like everything out there is a scam. Yeah, exactly. That's totally valid that you're like, I don't know what this is.
07:26And yet nervous feelings for sure beforehand. Absolutely. Cause it's definitely uncertain. You don't know what you're going to get on the phone and talk about or what even was what's going to follow afterwards. So let's talk about that. Like, how did you feel when you did talk to a team member and then what was your feelings and thoughts when you decided to join? So I can't remember the girl's name that I talked to, but she was really nice. It's really fun to talk to. And we just talked a lot about, you know, the things that I had done, you know, what I struggle with, you know, if I was really willing to put in the work and the time to make the changes, because I do know that you can buy any program in the world or any product in the world.
08:01But if you don't use it consistently, if you're not actually doing the work, making the effort, making the changes, then it's not going to work no matter how amazing it is. You know, she was really just trying to find out, is this lady really going to put in the work? And she really want to do this. And, but I got really excited the more I talked to her. And so I was excited to get a coach with nutrition and with workouts because I had done kind of, I worked with somebody with macros a little bit and I just, it wasn't like a good fit for me with this particular person. And I didn't get a lot of good direction and it was really more, they were just kind of
08:34there, you know? And so I was like, well, I'll do nutrition and workouts this time, even though, you know, I work out regularly anyway, but I was like, I'll just see if we can do something different. Maybe they have some insights to some workouts that I can do. You know, by the end of the call, I was like pumped and ready. And I was like, okay, let's go. Love that. Did you sign up right on the spot? Was there any like? I did. Yes. I signed up. Yeah. Right on the spot. Yep. I asked this all the worry, but it was, how did you feel about the cost of the program? It was a sticker shock for a minute. And then I was like, well, I mean, you got to invest in yourself some way.
09:08So I was like, I'll just, I do this and it, you know, ends up being a waste of time and a waste of money. You know, I probably spent more money wasted on, you know, other things. Yeah. And the other thing is like my husband, I think had done like a men's program somewhere that he had spent a ridiculous amount of money on and worked with and it was good for him. So, I mean, he enjoyed it. So I was like, you know what? I'll invest in me a little bit as well. See how this works. I, you know, I was not squinted. I was going to say, did we deliver on our value? Yes.
09:38Yes, absolutely. Yes. I'm happy to hear that. Quick break. Your support helps more women discover these tools to build muscle, lose fat and feel confident. Thank you so much for being a part of this journey with me. When you did like sign up, what was your first like couple of weeks? Like as you transitioned into working with your coach, you got your programming, like
10:11how did you feel? Were there any like fears or doubts or what did those first couple of weeks look like for you? So it was nice because like when I had my first call with my coach, you know, shout out Shayla. She's awesome. One thing that I really appreciated because I, you know, we fill out all the information about like our, you know, ourselves and you get to know us a little bit and you all kind of really listened to me and paired me with a coach that really, you know, I just really, it's a terrible thing. Vibed with. I'm going to say that. But yeah, like, you know, she's great and she, you know, really listened and she kind
10:42of talked through like, okay, you know, what is it that you're wanting out of this, you know, really came back with, okay, well, let's start with this plan and see how we go. And usually when I start something, I am pretty gung ho and like on top of it. And, you know, and then there's later where it starts to kind of, you know, backslide a little bit when life happens and, you know, things happen. So I was pretty like just getting with it. It wasn't until I started this, you know, program with my coach that like, I realized I was just overtraining. I was not letting my body rest when it needed to rest as much.
11:14I was pushing too hard and, you know, I did take rest days and things like that, but I think I was just, I was doing too much, you know, too often and just not really letting my body just recover enough. For more of like a tactical look at that, what were your training? What did that look like before? And then what did that look like when you started working with Shayla? Ladies, are you feeling frustrated with body changes you're experiencing during menopause?

That's warriorbabe.com forward slash apply. All right, let's get back to the show. I think I was doing like cardio every day and weights every day, just resting on weekends, but then also weeknights, one night a week, I was doing Irish dance as well.
12:49So I was doing like weights every day and cardio every day and then dance, you know, once a week at night. But then I would do like rest usually on the weekends. But it was usually I was still busy on the weekends. I mean, I have three kids. So it's, you know, you'll go go all the time with three kids. Yeah, always something. So yeah, so it was just I was just doing too much. And even though I like rested on the weekends, it still wasn't enough really rest for my body. I was just too much every day. That check engine light was probably getting really it was getting louder and louder and
13:21louder. It was it was all the other lights started coming on and it was just a bad deal. So what what made Warrior Babe different from like other methods or other programs you've tried before? Like I said, I did work with another coach with like macros and I don't feel like the coach fit was good. And she was just kind of there. Whereas I feel like, you know, like Shayla, who's amazing. Shout out to her again because love her so much. She is awesome. You know, she listens and she gives feedback and it's a lot more communication and collaboration
13:56when I'm like, hey, I had a really rough week and I'm going to have to dial back on a couple of these workouts because I my body just feels tired or like I stayed up too late and I've just really got to rest today. Or and then she's like, OK, let's do this and this and this instead. And I'm traveling and, you know, I'm not going to have access to like a full gym. And she's like, OK, well, let me get you these other workouts and like, OK, let's adjust this for this. And she really helps me make this program part of my life instead of just something I'm doing
14:27occasionally or that's on the back burner over here somewhere. It's it helps it be just ingrained in what I'm doing every day. I love to hear that. That's huge. You have a coach that listens to you and adjust things as you go when you need to. So you can feel like even though maybe I'm taking a little bit of a back step this week because my body needs the rest, you can get back at it next week. And then if you need to have adjustments for a hotel gym or whatever, she's going to be able to support you in that. I think that's freaking awesome. And you were nude for another year, right? I did. I did do that.
14:58So I was actually really bummed that my year was coming to an end. I was like, no, I was like, no, no, no. But then, you know, you guys were kind of like offering that deal. And I was like, OK, I was like, this would be the time because I really wanted to continue because I have over 40 years of habits, you know, some bad habits, some just not as great habits and just some habits that I'm trying to change. And that doesn't happen overnight. And I know that. And so, you know, and life happens and things get in the way.
15:31And that's OK because it's just a part of part of life. Yeah. And so I know that it's one year is just not, you know, I'm not going to fix everything in a year. It's not going to happen. And I know that, which is great. While I'm very happy with progress that I've made so far, you know, I want to continue to make progress and I want to continue to learn and grow. And I know that I still have things to work on and mindsets to change. You know, when there's so much ingrained in you for so long, it takes a while to shift those mindsets because it's easy to shift back into the mindsets.
16:03You know, old habits die hard. Yeah. And so I'm, you know, I'm excited to continue working and continue growing. And, you know, I listened to the call from the other night. It was really amazing because it felt like as I was listening to it, another kind of like mental shift, you know, for me about feeling stronger and not just about the scale of my body and how it looks and all that. I noticed here recently, which I hadn't even told Shayla yet. I've been really excited at dance class because I have been feeling really great at class and
16:36just performing better and feeling better. And I was really excited about it because I was like, it's just been when I first started this Irish dance, just I was 39 when I started it. And so it was a new hobby and I love it. So much fun. So much jumping, though. I bet your abs probably get a solid burn from that. Oof. Yes. Yes. Legs are on fire. So like, yeah, when I would come home from dance every time, every night I came home from dance, it was just once a week, I was taking ibuprofen. I had to stretch.
17:07My calves were cramped up. It was just pain. So, you know, so much pain all the time. And now that I've been with Warrior Babe now for over a year and like eating better and training better, I go to dance and I'm performing better. I'm not, my calves aren't cramped up when I get home because I have a 40 minute drive from dance to home. So I'm like working out and then sitting for 45 minutes and then I get out of the car. You know, it's not cramped up anymore. I'm not feeling like this horrible pain in my body like I was. And it's so amazing.
17:37That's awesome. I just feel better. Sorry, I was going on about that. I just get very excited because I'm like, I don't have that pain, the cramping in my legs and stuff like I had initially before. Yeah. And it's just nice to just feel better. Yeah. It's really cool that we know that how to interpret like beforehand, you were low on energy and low on like, like with going to this dance class. Now you can feel the difference. Like that's you giving your body the fuel and the nutrition that it needs to be able to perform at your best when you're dancing, which is every rate to feel excited about.
18:09And I love what you said too about like, you're excited for the next year. You were sad that your year was up because you know, this isn't like a short term thing. Like you have an awesome mindset and awareness that this is 40 years of habits that need to be like rewired. And you're excited to continue to grow, which honestly, like I just have to give you praise because it's a beautiful mindset to have because it means you're just going to continue to crush it with us in your journey as a warrior babe and beyond. Yeah. Yeah. With that, like where you're at in your journey now, I'd love to talk about that. Like what have your results been within this, the first year, like physically, mentally,
18:41emotionally? So it was funny because the first couple months, like the scale actually didn't move much at all. Like it was hanging out, but my pictures tell a very different story. Like I had gotten to this point. That's why it was like a, almost like a rock bottom for me because I was like, my belly is just huge. It's hanging out. I'm like, I almost feel like I'm wearing like a bodysuit, but it's not mine. You know, I'm like, this is not me. And so those first couple of months I could see my stomach was getting smaller, even though the scale wasn't moving, but it was seeing that physical change also was like a lot of
19:15motivation for me to keep going and keep pushing and be like, okay, this is working. It may not look like what I think it's supposed to look like, but it's working, but we get into the holidays a little bit. So I just kind of like maintained, you know, through the holidays a little bit, but then after the new year, I really dialed in and focused and that's when the weight started dropping. And so I was really excited about that. You're down how many pounds now? Somewhere I'm in the 17, 18, somewhere in there in that range. And I was excited the other day because I ran into somebody and they're like, oh, it
19:47looks like you've lost more weight. And I was like, well, thank you. Compliments, right? Yeah. I'm like, I'm not mad about that. But, and I think because I have been in the cut for a while, Jala was planning to maybe roll me into maintenance for a little while. And which at first I did tell her, I was like, that freaks me out. Yeah, of course. It freaks me out because that means more calories. And the whole, you know, like I have this like deep seated fear. It's like you eat too much and you just gain weight. Right. So I'm like, okay. So like, that's something I like, I have to work through.
20:17Like I know, and I'm going to trust. She knows what she's doing. And so like, we're getting ready to get into that season. And so I'm like, okay, we can do this. I can do this. We can work through this. And, you know, I did ask too. I was like, can we still do some body recomp in maintenance? She's like, absolutely. We still can. And I'm like, okay. I was like, we can do this. I will. Maintenance for the magic happens, Krista. Yeah. I'm excited for you to experience that magic. But all the feelings you feel are totally valid of being like, oh my gosh, I'm going to gain
20:48weight. I'm nervous. Like all my problems can be out the door. Totally normal. I can't wait to see you crush that season. I'm excited about that. It's just, yeah. So this last year has been really good because it's not only been like physical changes, you know, it's been emotional and mental and maybe I'll have a bad day or maybe I'll have some extra treats that I, you know, have because my whole family's got ice cream and I'm like, well, I don't want to be the only one not eating ice cream right now, you know, or, you know, we go somewhere and I'm like, well, this place has my favorite.
21:18cookie ever. I'm like, and then I have too many of those cookies, you know, you know, I don't let those days, you know, spiral, you know, I don't spiral into, well, I've already eaten this, so I might as well do this or this or this. It's okay. Well, I ate a little too much there, but you know what? That's okay. Because my next meal, I will choose better. Not my next day, not next Monday. It's my next meal. I'm going to choose better. Look at that mindset. I love that. Very powerful. It's been really great with, you know, knowing that even if I eat a little too much of something,
21:54I really probably shouldn't that day. It's okay. My next meal, whatever that is, if it's dinner or breakfast or whatever, I can choose to stay on plan. Yeah. Stay, you know, where I want to go. That's awesome. How has worry, babe, like impacted? Like even like your kids and your family, like a life outside of fitness. Do your kids look up to you with what you're doing now? Has anything nutritionally changed with the way you show up for them? Like, what does that look like? Well, what has been, I mean, in general, just being in fitness has been a positive impact
22:25on my whole family. The good thing is, is that like, it's not where your baby is. But I will say when I started working out consistently, you know, my kids were running all over me. And I'm like, look, I'm trying to work out. Leave me alone. You know, whatever. And we got to the point where like Saturday morning would come around and my kids are like, are you working out this morning? They get up in the morning. Have you done your workout yet? You know, or can you play with me? Or, you know, that kind of a thing. Yeah. So they got used to, to me working out. And then once I had lost all the weight previously, my husband was like, okay, I'll be your guinea
22:55pig. Like, what do I do? And he lost a bunch of weight, which don't get me started on men and weight loss. Right. Not fair. It's not, it's not fair. It's not fair. Look at food and lose weight, which is so. Right. I know it's, and they, you know, it's bigger. They get more, way more calories than I get, you know, being, you know, shorty McShorter. I hear you. So he got on that train with me. And then, you know, when I told him I was going to start this warrior babe and like, he's been a really supportive too and helps us stay on track with, you know, when we're
23:28out and about and kids are like, we want ice cream and you know, whatever. And he's like ice cream. And I'm like, we don't need ice cream. And he's like, yeah, we don't need ice cream right now. Let's, you know, cause we're both trying to really stay on track, you know, and there are times, yeah, we'll get a treat for her. But it's nice where he cooks, does most of the cooking. So he'll make sure that like our meals are good and well balanced and that there's an option for us, him and I, even if like the kids have something, he makes a big lasagna or something. Well, I'm like, I don't really want to get down with a big old lasagna tonight.
23:59Right. And so he'll make us, you know, like ground turkey or, you know, something like that. Or, you know, we'll have little turkey tacos or something, you know, something a little more on our plans. Right. So, which is great. Even with us eating healthy and doing that kind of thing, especially, you know, with this last year, the kids eat a lot healthier as well. And we did cut out dyes because my middle daughter is very adverse to dyes. And so we did cut out a lot of those artificial dyes, which helps them eat a little bit better too. And we make our own sourdough bread.
24:29And that's awesome. And we have a few little duckies that are adorable. So I get duck eggs from them because I'm actually allergic to chicken eggs, not anaphylactic, but just a high food activity. So I get the duck eggs and I get them. We buy chicken eggs from somebody so that we have more natural eggs and we get milk from somebody too. So it's, you know, we try to be a lot healthier just to try to get as, you know, less processed as possible. But I love that. With Warrior Babe, especially, my husband's been really supportive of it.
25:01And my kids, you know, see me doing the workouts and feeling better. And I've been, especially this last year, I will say with Warrior Babe, feeling better, eating better, working out better. I'm a better mom. You know, I'm a better mom to them. I'm not as, you know, angry and tired and, you know, just exhausted all the time. And my, you know, a better wife. And I'm able to, you know, be there more emotionally and physically for them, which is invaluable, right? Yeah. A hundred percent. I love that you touched on that. That is very invaluable.
25:33It goes a really long way. And it's just, you're setting the tone to being a role model for your kids and the way that you're showing up differently now for them. And the wife too. It's really cool. I love hearing that about your lifestyle and all the things that you're doing too, in which, you know, inspires them, but also the way that you guys are choosing to have different types of foods or, you know, making alternatives or you still have your treats, but you don't need them all the time. Like, I love that. That's what you call balance. That's great. I love that you're, you know, preaching that right now. I think everybody needs to hear that. I have one last question before we wrap it up.
26:03For someone that's watching this right now and watching and listening to like your story, they may be in like the same spot as you were in prior to joining Warrior Babe. What would you want them to know is possible for them? If they like have the same kind of mindset that you had going into your journey? I would say just, it's worth the investment. It's worth investing in yourself. This is such a wonderful community of people, even through like the Facebook groups and even in our groups on the fitness app and just the calls, you know, the community calls and things
26:36like that. I mean, this is such a beautiful, empowering community where everyone is lifting each other up and, you know, life is hard and like we are all going to go through struggles, right? But taking care of ourselves is so important. This program is worth putting in the work for. It's worth doing. It's worth being the best version of yourself. And even if you feel like it works for everybody, but me, everybody else can do that. I don't think I could ever do that.
27:06Absolutely not true. If you put in the work, if you trust and work with the coaches, it's going to work for you. I love that. Thank you, Krista. And everybody that's listening to this, let this be a reminder of her story and her transformation that it didn't happen overnight for Krista. She's aware of that. Like, you know, you're signed up for another year because you know that some things need to continue to be unwired for the 40 years of you, you know, living in this space and, you know, the time that you've been in the fitness area for you. But it does happen with, you know, what you've been doing is consistency.
27:37It's been support. It's been the right tools. It's been the community of women that you've been surrounded by within Warrior Babe. And you went from like overtraining and obsessing over the scale to building really like a life rooted in strength and energy and like, you know, trusting that you know how to listen to your body and you know what's good for it. But also, you know how to take on this program and optimize it to the way it works for you, which is really cool from what I'm hearing. So Krista, thank you for sharing your story. And for anybody that may be listening to this, if you're tired of like starting over, you're
28:07ready to build like a true lifestyle within your fitness journey. Go check out Warrior Babe, warriorbabe.com. Krista, thank you again. Appreciate you. Thank you so much. Yes. Thanks. Real quick.
