00:00What are some of the big wins that you're really proud of? Well, I've lost over 25 pounds, gained a lot of muscle. People are like, you're petite. And I'm like, did you know that? Well, no. So did you think it was possible to gain muscle and have these types of results at your age? No, I would never have guessed that I could do this. What's going on, everybody? Hey, you guys. Welcome back to another episode of The WarriorBabe Show. And today, we're just going to get right into it and straight to the proof.
00:35You guys are going to hear from real women who have had incredible results in their own personal bodies, in their 40s, in their 50s, in their 60s. They're building muscle. They're changing their body composition in ways that they did not think were even possible anymore. So if you guys are in the middle of your journey right now or you're at the start of your journey and you're wondering if it is actually going to work for you, then this episode is your answer. So let's get into it. Brynn, welcome.
01:05Hello. Thanks for having me. Yeah. So let's go back to where you were before you found WarriorBabe. Can you take us back to that? What were you struggling with the most prior to finding us? So I've always been pretty active trying to find different stuff. You know, I never really enjoyed the gym or lifting. And so, you know, I walked. I did half marathons. But my weight was never – I never really felt fit.
01:39You know, I was doing those things and had fairly good endurance or whatever. I'd hit the treadmill. But I just never really felt fit and didn't look fit. And then I'd do diets and I had no idea what food to eat. And so, you know, I just went up and down. I'd do a diet for a while. And then I'd get off it and I'd slowly go back up. You know, it takes time. But, you know, I just ended up in this just cycle, up and down, up and down.
02:10And, you know, I was really just looking for something that could help me, especially I hit menopause fairly early. And I just had no idea what I was even supposed to be eating. It seemed like everything out there was very general to younger people, you know, and not to where I was at in my life. So you mentioned that you weren't much of a gym person, which is interesting. What was your relationship with it? Like was it that you were just doing running and like a lot of cardio and things like that? What did that look like before?
02:42You know, I grew up doing like gymnastics and I loved being active. And but to me, it was just boring. I didn't really know what to do. It's I didn't see the benefits of it. It's intimidating to just going to the gym and, you know, not really knowing. I tried for a while to do a like pre-COVID where I'd go in and had kind of a trainer helping me.
03:13So I did start learning how to do some exercises, how to do them right and that kind of thing. But I just never really found much joy or interest. It was always a chore. So, you know, it's easy to put off chores. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, you're not motivated to do something. It's not you're not going to find it feels boring. You're definitely not going to take take to the liking of it and actually do it. What are some of the big wins that you're really proud of? Well, I lost over 25 pounds and gained a lot of muscle, which is, you know, people are really noticing recently.
03:54I don't know why all of a sudden people are really noticing recently, which is kind of fun. But, you know, I just I feel good. I feel confident. You know, I mean, I haven't worn a size six since I was in high school. So, you know, it's just people are like, you're petite. And I'm like, did you know that? Well, no, I did. It felt kind of fluffy. But so it feels it feels really good. And I did for a while, like I lost probably about 15.
04:27And then I just sort of got stuck for a while. And, you know, that was kind of like, OK, I've sort of plateaued. And I honestly don't know what changed in there. But then all of a sudden, you know, Hannah just kept saying, trust the process. Just keep trusting the process. And then all of a sudden, boom, you know, it went down. And I like lost another 10 and started getting all these muscles. And so it's that's what I want to highlight right there.
04:57What you just said, because there will be the 15 pounds or the 10 pounds or the five pounds that you that you see that you lose. In your case, you lost the 15. All of a sudden, you didn't change anything. You kept doing the same thing, essentially. Maybe there was like some tweaks here and there. And you just had to allow time, like for your body to just it was like we call it like an impersonal training role. We call it a whoosh. You experienced a whoosh where you broke through by not changing anything.
05:31You just needed time for your body to just like, you know, create its own changes. And then now without without changing a lot of things, what I'm trying to say is like people will go if they experience that and they don't have a coach in their corner, they will go and try and change five things. And you have five variables that you don't know which one actually caused a change, which don't need to. Sometimes you just need to let time pass and then your body will be able to create the change for you. So I love that. And I love that you mentioned that you went your size six now.
06:02So you went from a size 810 to a size six by eating more, right? You were eating more food. So can we also talk about that? Like you're eating over 2000 calories. You said 240 carbs on a low day. How like did you, was that something you expected to lose weight by eating more? Like, okay, talk about that. Not at all. Not at all. Not at all. Yeah. Yeah. It's, it's been, uh, yeah, it's funny. Cause I'll like, as my fiance's does, um, works out too.
06:37And he's like, you're up to what carbs now? You know? So, yeah, I enjoy eating. I mean, I always knew that was part of the problem with, you know, but I just didn't know what to eat. And, you know, I think, uh, it's been nice gaining the muscle and being able to continue. Um, and I think I'm still heading up a little bit where I feel like we haven't quite hit maintenance, but my maintenance was, I think maybe 1700 calories the last time.
07:08And, um, you know, we've been trying to kind of do a little bulk, but my body just keeps eating up these carbs and I'm not, the bulk isn't happening yet. And it's just like, well, we're not really doing a bulk or kind of, I guess. You're pushing your maintenance threshold right there. You're pushing it, the level of what your body can, can, can, can consume. And that's because of the muscle that you're building too. You're, you're increasing your metabolic rate, your resting metabolic rate by adding more
07:41muscle to your frame. So that's how you can eat more food. Is that, isn't that cool? It is. It's awesome. And I also wanted to say you were on one of our all hands meetings that we do for the company. Your transformation was shared and it's, it's yeah. And it's truly incredible how, um, how much your body has changed and how, how like drastic it's changed, which is really cool. I mean, you got some muscles girl. Yeah.
08:11Yeah. It's almost, it's kind of a little embarrassing sometimes now. Cause it just feels weird. You know, I'm 58 this week and you know, they're like, are you getting ready for a show? And I'm like, no, I'm just being, I'm just, I'm just doing my thing. So did you think it was possible to gain muscle and have these types of results at the, at your age? No, I would never have guessed that I could do this, you know? So it's, it's very, it's exciting.
08:43I mean, one of my goals was always to, I want to stay fit and be able to do stuff with my kids. You know, my four kids are all adults now and I still want to, you know, be able to go and do physical things and stuff. And now there, I'm going to be a grandma now. So, you know, I'm excited for, you know, being able to stay healthy and do stuff with the grandkids and not be that grandma that, you know, you know, they're pushing around in a wheelchair.
09:13Yeah. Yeah, girl. Yeah. That's amazing. That's awesome. And congrats on being a grandmom too. I love that you're thinking proactively about your health and like long-term about it because yeah, you, it's, you know, I think about the caretaker burden or like when you get older and like, you know, people having to push you around, like you don't have to do that. You want to take care of yourself now. So your family doesn't have to feel that. And you get to keep up with them. Like you get to do activities. You get to run around with them. You get to pick up the grandkids. Like, yeah, that's, I, that's how every woman should be approaching later, their later
09:44years thinking from that lens. So I hope that women feel encouraged or courage by listening to you say that. Hey, while you're listening, if you're getting value from this episode, take a moment to tap that review button or share this podcast with a friend. It's a small gesture that goes a long way in helping more women find their way to feeling stronger and more confident in their skin. I appreciate you so much for taking the time to support this show. Hey everyone. What's going on? So today I've got another warrior babe here with us.
10:17Yeah. Oh, welcome. Thank you. Thanks for having me. What led you to realize that something needed to change? Like what led you to, to realize, okay, like I gotta get a, get a grip of this. Well, you know, I've always been a seeker my whole life. And so I starting when I was about 15 or 16, I started exercising, but I was constantly being thwarted by my body. And I'll tell you why. So when I was 10 years old around that time, and it's weird how kids change, right?
10:48All of a sudden, like by the end of the school year, they had decided that they, they totally didn't even remember doing it. And they just started inviting me to play kickball with them. And I was like, really? And then of course I wanted to belong so badly. I did, but I was also, again, I didn't, I wasn't athletic as a kid. And so I was, I was born with my feet kind of splaying out that way and I didn't know it. And so I played, so the kids like brought me in, right? It's summertime and I'm like, okay.
11:19And I kicked the ball and I run, but I don't realize that I'm kicking my heels. And then there was a hole at the end and my foot twisted and I broke the side of my foot. And I had a cast for, you know, a little bit when I was around 10. So now fast forward to I'm 16 and I'm trying to like, and I have taught myself since then to walk with my feet straight, right? Cause, but back then when I was 16, I still didn't know it. I'm like, why do I kick my ankles all the time? So I said, I'm going to start jogging. And so, and I'm, and so I started jogging and guess what happened?
11:53My foot twisted and went in a hole. Oh no. No. And so that started my S that started my lower back stuff. Cause my SI joint got wanked out. I started seeing chiropractors and blah, blah, blah. Then, so, so then when I got to college, I had sciatica and then I was like, thank God there was this one credit exercise class. And they're like, if you strengthen your stomach and I'm like, oh, is that how this works? So I started doing lots of sit-ups and my sciatica went away and I started lifting weights
12:26and I'm like, oh, I like this. And even though I was still in the groundhog's day of the overeating and the undereating, and I didn't even know anything about that when I was 19 or 20 years old and massively binging at that point. But it just over the years, um, just kind of, I kept being physical. I kept going up and down, up and down, in and out, tennis, martial arts, you know, hiking, biking, loving being in my body. And then, and then all of a sudden something would happen.
12:57And like my knee would go out and then I'd have to take six months off because I couldn't walk. Like it was, and, and I found it only later. It's because I'm hypermobile and I didn't know it. And so like yoga is the worst thing for me because they're like, look how bendy you are. And then I, I'd hurt myself without knowing it. Cause I wasn't stretching the right things. Right. And so fast forward. And, and finally it was, it was not until, uh, let's see, how old was I? It wasn't until my forties. And I, um, had a boyfriend who was, who went into a 12 step program for smoking.
13:32And so he said, would you come with me to a meeting? I said, sure. And so I was listening to these people in the meeting, never been to a 12 step, never heard of it. And I thought, oh my God, if you just took out tobacco and put in sugar or food or eating, I was like, oh my God, that's me. And so I actually went into overeaters anonymous and learned that it's not about overeating. It's about all these other things. And it's also about, I went in and I would say, hi, I'm, I'm an over and under eater
14:04and a, and a compulsive thinker. That's what I said. And, and so I, that program was really the start of me. Cause I realized that that, cause I saw this chart of the pancreas when you eat too much sugar and how they go like that. And I said, oh, everybody in my family is diabetes. I'm on the road to hell right now. Like I've got to do something. And even then it hadn't stopped, but that was big part of my journey. And then it's just kind of, it's just gotten ever better from there.
14:34And then until I got to warrior babe, when I realized I was kind of fooling myself still not in the same ways, but that I was fooling myself that I was actually eating enough. Oh, interesting. So you were fooling yourself that you were eating enough when you were in that pro in the program, thinking that you were getting enough, but then let's see what you got to warrior babe and you weren't eating enough. Oh no. What are some of the goals that you you've accomplished so far with warrior babe?
15:05You know, like everyone else, I wanted to look good. Right. And so one of the things I can say is that I haven't worn shorts that exposed my legs for 25 years and all summer I've only worn shorts and that's felt really comfortable for me. Yeah. And there's a strength of fun to be stronger. And, uh, I was at an event, uh, where we were doing some picnicking and I was carrying up the stairs, the cooler with ice and stuff.
15:38And then this other heavy bag with plates and stuff in it. And I was just kind of like carrying it up the stairs and it was heavy, you know, and I was carrying, carrying it. And I was nearing the top of the stairs and this, this man said, Oh, would you like some help? And I said, no, thank you. I lift weights. And he said, I can tell. And I was like, that's fun. And so, um, you know, so just having the strength and, you know, as we age, I mean, this is the way to age gracefully and to have more muscle.
16:08And, you know, if I am walking and there's a wire and I trip and I land in a squat because, and, you know, and I've been working out most of my life, but this difference now that my hand is healed, I mean, having to be adaptable. So it's been slow, slow and steady. And there's, there's been plenty of times when I've been like, well, I don't look like that woman or I don't look like that woman. And I'm not getting the definition that I want here or this and that. But it's been a very, it's been good for me against a little bit of my will, but it's
16:44been the best thing for me to go slow and steady. And when I first signed on for Warrior Babe and I'm like one year, I'm never going to do more than one year. What year are we on now? I'm at the end. I have three more months out of my second year and I'm definitely signing on for my third year. Yeah. And I know if you had asked me that even last year, I was like, oh my God. No, look, I can go away and travel now. I, I know what four ounces of rice looks like and I know, you know, and that's cool.
17:14And I still weigh my food periodically. I still weigh my food at home just because I like to know. Um, but the other thing is that like, I'm starting to like really get like, I'm in the gym and I'm like, oh wow. Like I can see definition in my arm and, uh, and that it's just fun. Don't get attached to the, to it, right? Like you'd like it, but don't get attached to it in a way that's dysfunctional, but it just feels good at 60 to be like, wow, you're 60.
17:46Yeah, I am. And that feels, thank you. I appreciate that. And, and so the zoom does wonders for the wrinkle. We can just talk on zoom. If I just held the camera up. You know, but, um, and so, yeah, I'd say, um, I, I jumped on my bike yesterday and normally this one uphill, I'd be struggling with it. I stood up and pedaled up the entire hill. I'm like, well, dang, I guess my lower body stuff's doing pretty good.
18:16Wow. Yeah. So for me, it's, it's always been, how do I be fit for life? How do I make sure that if I, if, first of all, if I do fall, my bones are stronger because I have more muscle and, and most of the time, just, you, you know, you're, you're limber, you're, you know, you're in your body and, you know, I'm a dancer as well. Like I just want to, I just want to be able to be active until the very end. And I'm in that last stage and, you know, the last stage could be 30 more years. So it's not that last, but, um, I just want to keep doing that and strength training from
18:52the time I was 25 years old and I first started, I was like, bingo, this is the key to growing old gracefully. And so, but now that my hand is healed and, um, and I, and I told, um, Kaza my secret, my secret goal. And I said, I've never been able to do a pull-up. I want to do 10. I want to do this one, but I'd love to do 10. She's like, okay, then we're doing it. And so I'm, uh, we're actively working towards that as a goal. And, um, I really love having that, that as a goal.
19:25Yeah. I love that. That's all. Yeah. That I can't wait. Can you do one yet? Are we at one yet or no? Okay. Amazing. That's a great goal though. Yeah. That's a great goal to work towards. Yeah. The machine I'm now at like on the assisted at 45 and I could go to 40, but they don't have it. So we're just going to keep working on it. And yeah, but I started cracking up cause I did it on 30 and I hung there and I tried to move and I started laughing. Oh, I love that you find humor in it too. That's great. But I love that. Slow and steady is good for you.
19:56Like you said, and I love that you said it's against your own will, but sometimes that's how it's meant to be. Right? So totally. Yeah. Yep. Today. I have another warrior babe here with us, warrior babe, Angie. So let's talk about where you were before you found warrior babe, a little bit more like fleshed out. I'm 47 years old. I had previously worked out in my twenties to my thirties, a cardio queen as they would call them. So not really a muscle builder. Um, and then before founding warrior babe, I was 10 years out of a routine workout practice.
20:34I became a nurse and then a nurse practitioner and I'm a single mom. And I was in a marriage that I never should have been in, um, right before, um, starting the program and, uh, extremely depressed. Um, wasn't moving, uh, wasn't eating well. I wasn't overweight necessarily by BMI, but body composition was not where I wanted it to be. You know, it's just in a funk.
21:07Ladies, are you feeling frustrated with body changes you're experiencing during menopause? It's time to take control. That's warrior babe.com forward slash apply. All right, let's get back to the show. Yeah. Yeah. You were averaging how many steps a day? Oh, 1300, maybe. And then how many grams of protein were you eating in the day?
22:1480, maybe. And it's crazy too, because your background, right? Specifically, you're an NP. Yes. In. Yes. Go ahead and elaborate. In. I do medical weight loss, medically supervised weight loss, and it's a protein predominant program. Cardiology, my background, and hormone replacement therapy. So I know all about it and yet was not helping myself at all. I couldn't. I, it just wasn't working for me. Okay. Let's talk about the training. So you started eating more food coming in.
22:44You were noticing things happening within like the first week to two weeks, depression lifting, moving more. What is your strength training like protocol look like or workout protocol look like from what you obviously were doing a lot of running, you said. So what changed in that realm once you came into warrior, babe? I don't do cardio. I mean, my cardio is walking. That's it. And it's beautiful. I tell everyone. And your knees and everyone like that love you.
23:14I hate cardio. I, I've never loved it anyway, but I was like, you're supposed to do cardio. And so anyone I meet women, especially over 40, I'm like, don't just walk, please. I don't need you to be doing sprints and, you know, hardcore 180 beats per minute heart rate cardio. That's not, that's not what's good for us at this point. No, I walk only about a mile and a half. Annie actually told me, don't worry about my steps. It's just because I was so focused on getting 10,000 steps.
23:48I don't. Sometimes I'll just in the living room drop and do some squats and pushups because that's what time I have in that moment. I don't lift heavy, heavy. I've never been, I've had a shoulder nerve injury that I'd opened a repair on. And so before this program, I couldn't hardly even lift it above right here. And then after this, I'm, I'm able to literally cut down my trees and, um, do things that I never was throwing, you know, throwing logs and stuff that I just never expected I would
24:22be doing at this age. But I'll, I'll switch upper body, push, pull, lower body, push, pull core. I do a lot. And never really heavy. I just have never been heavy lifter. What, uh, what, what would you say about working with coach Annie? Like how is someone being there to guide you, to hold you accountable? What does that look like for you along your way? She has been unbelievable. This program, her completely saved my, my life. I think truly, um, I've told her that on multiple occasions, my mind was not in a good spot and,
24:56um, starting this program and with her help and everyone and all of her babes on, you know, our chat site, it's amazing how much women can come together and support each other through every stress that you could even imagine. Everyone's going through something at some point. Starting this program helped me get out of the marriage that I should never have been in and, uh, has helped me become a better mom. And Annie has done nothing but cheer me on. And as always there, if I need something, I think she's, she's been fabulous as a, a friend
25:31and a coach. That's amazing. I love to hear that. So since joining, let's talk about some of the, I mean, we're kind of touching on each aspect, but what would you say are some of your biggest top achievements that you've had since, since joining Warrior Babe? I'm most proud of making myself a priority. First of all, it's always been hard for me period, but especially in the last five years or so, it's been difficult, but it's also important. I've realized that as well. I'm actually going to pause you there. Yeah. I'm going to pause you there.
26:01Let's how tactically, how did you do that? Right? It's one thing a lot of women hear, okay, yeah, I made myself a priority, but like, what did that look like on a day-to-day basis for you that you would have to, because you're a single mom, you left the marriage, you had to show up for, you know, a lot of your work, her, how did you prioritize yourself in a day? Making sure I was my meal. I knew what I was going to eat each meal. I knew prepping the meals. Again, making sure I put everything in my fitness pal. So I knew what I was getting, getting in a day and knew what I had left to eat.
26:33Making time for, to walk outside, even when it was negative 10. Like I hate winter, cannot stand it. And I put on every piece of clothing and made myself walk at least a mile outside in my neighborhood and came back and it's, it was great. And I'll do it again. Making sure that I had time to get in strength training. That makes me feel so good, strong in both mind and body. And then with all of that, depression is not as bad.
27:06And you're able to show up for people that you care about, show up for yourself, show up for my daughter. She sees now and she's kind of jumps in with workouts now. And then it just made me a happier person to eat for my body and my mind and also move and keep track of all that. And I like tracking stuff like that. So it was very easy for me to, to do so. That's awesome. That's so cool. I would definitely say that's a solid top achievement.
27:36Yes. Thank you. I think so. What other, maybe if you had to name two others, what would be two other ones that you had? Healing the shoulder and being able to increase what I never thought I'd be able to lift anything again with this shoulder. I had complete atrophy of my entire scapula. Wow. Completely, all my muscle went away. So that, when that injury occurred, that really set me back and was depressing. And then when I've been able to build it back up and, and, and now I'm able to do things that I didn't think I was going to do, this program helped me do that.
28:08But I, I have more energy that I couldn't get before that has made a huge difference in every aspect of my life. Coming home from work and being with my daughter, I'd come home from work and be like, I got to lay down or I'm tired or whatever. I also volunteer as a nurse at an overnight camp every summer. And so this past summer, people like the, everyone there at camp was like, oh my God, what have you been doing? Um, so, and I, again, I only lost nine pounds.
28:39It wasn't anything that was like huge, but they could just tell, like I've been working on myself and just noticeably happier. That's the cool thing about like, you're, it's not going to be the pounds lost. It's going to be the photo shown. So in every way that's listening to this, you know, I think Angie's story is proof that sometimes knowing what to do isn't always enough. You truly have to believe that you're worth showing up for. And once Angie made like what started as a decision to prioritize their health became a decision
29:10to choose yourself every single day. And, uh, what I love too about your story, Angie, is that you are laying the foundation. You're creating the foundation for lasting health for those around you, which is a part of our mission statement for your daughter, um, for the people that are in your life. And I would say like to anybody that just heard Angie's story right now, and they find yourself in the same boat that she was before take that action step, you know, check out warrior, babe, get inside the program, get a coach. Yeah.
29:40I mean, doing it alone is one thing you heard. Angie was very independent. Um, but there was a point where she needed that help. And we all, if we can humbly say, you know, that we need help along the way, along the journey. So that's your reminder that you can find your way back to you. And Angie, I appreciate you sharing that story. I appreciate you opening up and being. Thank you. And I think it's really cool. Appreciate you. A year and a half, girl. Like you, you just, you got so much more time to keep changing that body, which is really cool. Yes.
30:10Thank you. Hey, really quick before you go, I have one small favor to ask.
