How do I find my why for getting fit?

Answered by Nikkiey Stott and her guests · Updated

The short answer

Keep asking yourself why until you get past the surface goal. Nikkiey says losing weight, toning up or looking good in a bikini are fine goals but superficial. Ask why you want them, again and again, until you reach an emotional reason, like being a role model for your kids or keeping up with your grandkids.

The full answer

Nikkiey calls this the power of the whys. When a client says she wants to lose fat or tone up, Nikkiey loves that goal, but she keeps going: why do you want to lose weight? What does health mean to you? What does toned mean to you? She asks until you can put the real reason into words yourself, because saying it out loud is how you come to understand it.

The deeper answers she hears sound like this:

  • Being a role model for your kids, so they see the healthy habits mom is building
  • Playing with your grandkids instead of watching from the couch
  • Feeling confident in your own skin, or in front of your husband
  • Combating health issues that run in your family
  • Not repeating the lifetime of dieting you watched growing up

On Ep. 151, Nikkiey adds that a real why is about valuing your health, your future and your longevity, and being proactive now rather than reactive after a diagnosis or a health scare. On Ep. 136, guest Olivia Eve explains why surface goals fall short: they are infinite. Lose five pounds and you will want to lose 10. A deeper reason is what keeps you going when results are slow.

Once you find it, make it visible. On Ep. 149, Nikkiey says to write it down and put it where you see it every day, and on Ep. 40 she even suggests writing it on your hand. Then build a picture of the woman who has already reached your goal: how she talks, what she does. Nikkiey points to Ep. 4 and Ep. 40 as the places to start, and says that once the why carries real emotion, daily action gets much easier to follow through on.

What should I do after a bad day of eating?

Get back on plan at your very next meal, not next Monday. Nikkiey says not to beat yourself up: one bad meal does not ruin your diet. Ask what led to the slip, adjust, and if you overate earlier, lean on protein for the rest of the day instead of restricting or giving up.

How do I find time to work out when I'm busy?

You don't need more hours; you need to put yourself on the schedule you already have. Nikkiey suggests checking your phone's screen time and giving an hour of scrolling or TV to a 30-minute workout or meal planning, then blocking workouts on your calendar and adjusting the number of days until it sticks.

  • Consistency & Mindset

How do I stay consistent when I have no motivation?

Stop waiting for motivation and build discipline instead. Nikkiey explains that motivation is an emotion that ebbs and flows and will run dry, often weeks or months in. Discipline means acting in line with your long-term goals despite how you feel, and you build it the same way you build muscle: by showing up day after day.
