Can You Build Muscle at 70? One Woman's Transformation

Chapters

In this episode

Peggy has worked in fitness since 1985, but by her late 60s she was in pain, struggling to get up off the floor and climb stairs, and eating about 1,300 calories while tracking every macro. She had belly weight, IBS, reflux, eczema, poor sleep and forgetfulness, and she refused to accept that it was just what happens at her age. A 3:21 a.m. video from Nikkiey Stott led her to WarriorBabe, four to five months after a knee replacement and a hip replacement.

In this conversation, Peggy tells Nikkiey how she started with heavily modified workouts once a week, built up to three and now five strength days, and slowly raised her food from 1,300 to almost 1,600 calories with her coach Stacy. She describes how scary the first bit of weight gain felt, why it stopped mattering once she felt better, and how layering in meal timing, fiber and sodium changes helped her gut health more than years of searching.

Now 70, she carries her 11-foot paddleboard to the lake on her own, sees definition in her legs and triceps, and has her doctors asking to film her mobility. Her message to any woman who thinks she is too old or is sitting on the fence: find your why, and know that you are worth it.

Key takeaways

  • Peggy was tracking macros and eating about 1,300 calories yet still had belly weight, IBS, reflux, eczema, poor sleep and forgetfulness, which showed her that eating that little was not working for her body.
  • With her coach, she raised her intake from 1,300 to almost 1,600 calories, and the small weight gain that scared her at first stopped mattering once she started feeling so much better.
  • Her nutrition changes were layered one at a time: getting the right macros, then dividing her meals better, then adding fiber and watching sodium.
  • When a full workout is too much, do what you can; her coach told her that if she couldn't do 10 minutes, do five, and she built from one session a week to three and now five.
  • Modify exercises to fit your current baseline, such as using an exercise ball for flies when getting up off the floor isn't possible yet.
  • Progress isn't only the scale or tape measure; Peggy tracks it through muscle definition, seeing her triceps, and being able to carry her paddleboard to the lake alone.
  • Decades of fitness knowledge didn't mean she could do it alone; staying humble and open to new research is what got her the missing pieces.
  • Before telling a woman she isn't too old, Peggy says to find out her why, whether that's keeping up with grandkids at an amusement park or walking the Appalachian Trail.

Questions answered

Can you build muscle at 70?

Peggy's story says yes. At 70 she sees definition returning in her legs and triceps, her scale's muscle number has gone up by about four pounds, and she can carry her 11-foot paddleboard seven minutes to the lake by herself.

Can you start strength training after a knee or hip replacement?

Peggy joined WarriorBabe about four to five months after her knee and hip replacements, modified every workout and started with one session a week. She describes her doctors asking to video her because her knee bends past 120 degrees and she can get up off the floor without a chair.

What happens when you eat more after years of low calories?

Peggy went from about 1,300 to almost 1,600 calories and gained a little weight at first, which felt scary. It stopped being scary once she felt so good, and she says her IBS is now gone and her clothes fit better.

What does Peggy's workout week look like at 70?

She now follows a five-day plan: full body on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, lower body on Tuesday and Thursday, and water aerobics at the lake on weekends, where she also helps other women.

What would Peggy tell a woman who thinks she's too old to build muscle?

She would first ask about the woman's why, because everyone has a different one. She believes you are worth it, and that seeing someone else do it often helps a woman realize she can too.

Full transcript

Peggy: I was in so much pain. There's not a doctor that could fix that. I don't care that I'm 70. That's not okay.

Nikkiey: And you signed up for WarriorBabe.

Peggy: Oh, yes, ma'am. How else was I going to get in shape? Because our bodies require attention. They are like cars, and the older they get, they need to be tuned up and shined and have the spark plugs changed. My doctors cannot believe I can crawl on my knees. I can do child's pose. I can get up and down off the floor without holding on to a chair.

Nikkiey: What's going on, everybody? Today I have another WarriorBabe here with us, WarriorBabe Peggy, who has been in the fitness space since 1985. She had a knee and a hip replacement and years of immobility and postmenopausal struggles, which I know a lot of women are going to really resonate with, and she found herself at a breaking point. She was under-eating. She was overwhelmed, and she no longer felt like herself. That's when she found WarriorBabe. With the guidance of her coach and the community, she finally got it. She's rebuilding her body. She's rebuilding her mindset from the inside out. Now she's strong, deeply grounded in a new lifestyle rooted in self-love, healing and purpose. And she's here to tell her story today. Peggy, welcome.

Peggy: Wow. You nailed the whole thing. Thank you.

Nikkiey: Of course. I'm really excited to have you here and for you to share your story. I want to go all the way back. Where was your health and fitness situation? What did that look like before you joined WarriorBabe? Go back however many years you want, to include the most context you can.

Peggy: I was in the middle of leaving high school teaching, building a house, a marriage that fell apart and is still a train wreck, personal struggles. And here I am in Antrim, New Hampshire. Actually it was before I moved, or just around the move. Anyway, dates don't matter. I just was, oh my goodness, what am I doing here? Some other program came up, and I was in it for about five months or something like that. It just didn't feel like it had the tread meeting the road. It didn't have enough parts. There was something that in my heart I knew was missing. I had these macros and I had these exercises, but I didn't feel like there was some glue.

And one night, literally it was 3:21 in the morning. That's when I get all my inspiration. I was born on March 21st at 3:21 in the morning. So my inspiration pops up at that hour. I opened my phone because I was going to speak my request to my spirit to help me, and your video came up on Facebook, which I hadn't even turned on. I listened to the whole thing. I asked for help, I got an interview, and I joined you. I was in all that mess, but I was in this house, and it was 43 to 45 weeks ago. I knew where I was wasn't right, but it was close. And I knew that I couldn't do it on my own. That was the biggest thing, because the more you know, of course you think you can do it on your own. I think that's a lot of our problems sometimes, because it was mine. I had been in the fitness industry since 1985. Who can tell me more than what I know? I know about me. I know my body. But I was convicted a hundred percent. The way your energy came through the video, the next morning I called, I talked, they told me how much, I said, great, here's my credit card. I didn't care, because I knew that I knew that I knew, from all of it, that this was the right place.

And I have not been disappointed, because all that I knew was pulled together in a braid by putting the glue together with the things that I didn't know. It was in concert with what I already knew was good, but I just didn't know how to build the house. I didn't know how to put it together. Every single thing that my coach has put together is the next thing I needed. And the listening helped me to find the next step, so that I brought my life with me. Nobody told me my life was wrong. They said, let's take what's good about your life and let's add to it so that we can make you the best version of yourself. And I believed it because it made sense, because it was in line with research and with what I understood, and my spirit said it was right. That's it. Short answer, long answer. That's my truth.

Nikkiey: I am just so happy you're a part of the WarriorBabe community now. I think that's really cool how it came about for you. Fellow Aries sister, by the way. Your birthday is a day before mine. I think it's really cool being born at 3:21 and then having inspiration at 3:21. That's an answered prayer right there. You were guided each step along the way: to watch the video fully, then apply, then chat with someone on the team. And now you're here with us. And you're not only 45 weeks in, coming up on your first year, you're also in for three more years. So you're fully committed. I love that.

I want to take a couple of steps back before you found that video. You mentioned that you were postmenopausal and dealing with years of immobility. What toll did that take on your body and on your mindset at that time?

Peggy: I'm an overcomer. I'm one of those really resilient people. In 2019, when I fell, all of a sudden I had this hip ache and I'm like, oh, this is not fun. So I went to the doctor and she said, well, we don't need x-rays and you're fine. So I thought since I was fine, I could just keep on going. I joined the local Y and started doing bootcamp, and all of a sudden COVID shut everything down, which was probably a blessing, because I think I probably would have hurt myself. I was going to bootcamp all the time and I was in so much pain.

So here I knew that I was an exercise person, but my body wasn't cooperating. Like, what? I can't hike. I can't go upstairs. I need to hold onto things. I don't care that I'm 70. It doesn't matter. That's not okay. And my inside said something is just terribly wrong and we're going to find answers. So I went through regenerative naturopath stuff, and some of it's worked and some of it hasn't. The desperation to get my health back was what kept me looking, not quitting. So I did not quit and say, oh well, you're 70, that's what 70-year-old people do. I was five years younger then, 65. I wasn't buying that. 65 is young. My dad was 95 and he was still kicking around helping people shovel. My dad taught me that's who I am. And inside, that person was screaming that I could. I was in total denial that I could not get up off the floor, that I could not go upstairs. I was in total denial, and I wasn't going to allow that truth. So I was living in conflict. I was denying my own truth. I was immobile.

Nikkiey: I hear that. You're very resilient. You're going to figure it out and see it through, but you were definitely living in denial, while seeking to find the answers you wanted to find, which you didn't give up on. What did it feel like? Being in the fitness space since 1985, for decades, what did it feel like to feel lost with your health? Did it feel like you were living in a double world, like I'm in the fitness space, but I feel lost with my health?

Peggy: I felt like I was walking through the valley of the shadow of death, like the song says. Or walking through a knot hole, a dark, long cave, and I knew there was a light and I knew it was my light, and I knew it was dark. And I didn't allow that dark to overcome my hope. I didn't know where it was going to come from, because in the meantime I was tracking my macros. I probably helped get MyFitnessPal off the ground, because I've been tracking my macros probably since that silly thing has been around. If you look at my streak, it's like forever. So I was tracking macros. That's a good thing. I was eating 1,300 calories. That's a good thing. I was moving. I was using MyFitnessPal so that I could figure it out. I was doing all these things, and I was feeling like there's something else.

And I knew there was something. I just believed there was something, because all my life there was always something else. I didn't get here by just sitting on my little side of the road when I was five or when I was 20 or when I was 40. I've overcome, and we all have to overcome to get to where we are. And I had to believe that I was overcoming what I didn't understand, but there was an answer somewhere that I had never come across, because I don't believe I know it all. I had to have that hope and knowing that there was something I didn't know that I was searching for, because once we think we know it all, we can't go anywhere. So it's really humbling myself and saying, you know what, it doesn't matter how many years. Somebody knows something more, because research keeps going on. And there's a Nikkiey Stott out there somewhere who is going to provide for me. I didn't know who you were, but I know when I was in the fitness industry, I was always doing what I could for my peeps. So I knew someone was out there who was like me when I was younger, who was going to help me. I believed it with every fiber of my heart.

Nikkiey: I think that's a huge thing to point out right there, Peggy. You had the type of mindset where you were willing to stay humble and stay open-minded to anything new that was coming out in the fitness space, and not think you knew it all just because you'd been in the fitness space for decades. You were open and willing to say, okay, there's someone like me out there nowadays giving new information, and I need to learn from that person. And lo and behold, at 3:21, I came onto your phone.

Peggy: You're a younger me, but you have done what I wish I could have done. I took off on a different path. You are a mini me. There was something about you that resonated: your hope for all of us and your truth and your research. It's not just fly-by-night, look at these bodies. It's a process. Life is a process. You don't get to the age we are, whether you're 40 or 50 or whatever, without going through a process. And the process is the thing. It's not the goal. If you hit the goal, then what? It's a process of life to get to better places, and there are beautiful buoys along the way.

Nikkiey: Oh, I love that. That warmed my heart. Thank you, Peggy. You mentioned a second ago that you were eating 1,300 calories, and I know you were still struggling at that. What did that feel like?

Peggy: I didn't realize how bad it was for my body. With the stress and all of this, I was gaining middle belly weight. So there was evidence in my body. I also had irritable bowel syndrome, IBS. I don't like to use acronyms, because for people who don't know them, I feel like I'm leaving them out. So, irritable bowel syndrome. I wound up with gastric reflux. I wound up with eczema. I know I wasn't sleeping enough, because I was starting to be forgetful. And I knew there's nothing wrong with my brain. My brain's good. So something else was making me forgetful. I'm not one of those people who says you get older, you get forgetful. That's a lie. I knew that the forgetfulness and no sleep meant something was not functioning at the level I knew my body could. I'm a Corvette.

Nikkiey: You're a Ferrari, baby. That's what you are, Peggy.

Peggy: Oh yeah, I've driven Ferraris. I like Corvettes better. Okay. So I'll be a Ferrari for you. I'll be a red Ferrari.

Nikkiey: I love that.

Okay. So 3:21 comes around in the middle of the night. You get a video of me. What stood out the most to you in that video? Was there a word I said? Was there something that just resonated with you?

Peggy: I'm a gestalt girl. The whole-picture girl. The energy that was coming at me, my spirit said, listen. I was open, and you were honest. You were not making false promises, nothing like it's going to happen tomorrow. The macros, I know, are true. So you hooked me because it was something I already knew was true. I think there are a lot of people out there who know macros are true, but it's like they have a weapon or a tool. For a lot of people it's a weapon, because they think if they follow the macros alone, that does it. But that hooked me. And then the other pieces, with the exercise, and knowing that muscles are where my hormones are made. I know this. I know that muscles are hormone factories. And I know that at my age, if I don't get those muscles, I don't have hormones. If I don't have hormones, I can't live. Estrogen and androgen and all those dudes are coming out of here, and if I only have a little... I knew all those things. What I was hearing on the screen from you was the full gestalt of what makes somebody, especially women, healthy. No osteoporosis, because you're building. I don't remember exactly what you said, but it pulled together everything I had and said, yes, that's the full enchilada. I'm in the right restaurant and I'm going there to eat.

Nikkiey: I love that analogy. That's an awesome analogy. Okay. So you saw the video, it all resonated with you, you filled out an application, you talked to the team the next morning and you signed up. First of all, I love that. Just committed out of the gate. Did the price tag feel any type of way to you? Were there any reservations or skepticism at all?

Peggy: It lasted a very short time, because if you're going to go to a gym, you're going to get a coach. You're going to have a nutritional analysis person. You're going to have psychological support. You're going to have a team. There are five places. Every time you go to a counselor, it's a hundred dollars. You go to a nutritional counselor, a hundred dollars. You get a coach, it's a hundred dollars. You get all those other things. Plus you get a team. If you take apart all the parts that you give, it's priced exactly the way it would cost to get your act together. So what's the deal? It took me a minute, a New York minute. That's where the first 30 years of my life were. I just said, wait, you know what? I know I can do this. I looked, and it didn't take me long to find it. Where there's a will, there's a way, as a retired person. It was going to be what I was going to do, because it was going to get me where I needed to get.

Nikkiey: I love the way you broke it down. What's so cool about that breakdown is you're mentioning five different buckets of life, which would consist of five different types of attention from different people. So you'd be getting five different people to focus on one thing, when really you're getting it all focused in with one person to help you on your journey here on the inside. So let's talk about those first few weeks after you signed up with WarriorBabe: trusting your coach, doing less all at once. What were the first few weeks like with us at WarriorBabe?

Peggy: I was so exposed to how out of shape I was. Stacy and I were talking and she said, okay, we can do three a week, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, let's do weights. And I would do the first workout and I would have to modify. I'm like, this new baseline isn't what I ever imagined. I got a new baseline, but at least it's easy to improve on, because I'm hardly able to do anything. I can't even get down on the floor and get up. Because at that point, it was March 19th that I had my knee done and April 28th that I had my hip done. You do the math. We're just a year out and a little bit. So I was brand spanking new off my surgeries.

Nikkiey: Holy cow. So did you sign up before? No, you signed up after.

Peggy: If you go back a year from now, we're in August. So by August, you go back March, April, May, June, July, August. Four to five months out of my surgeries.

Nikkiey: And you signed up for WarriorBabe.

Peggy: Oh yes, ma'am. How else was I going to get in shape? That stupid physical therapy.

Nikkiey: Oh yeah. I forgot physical therapy. Bucket number six.

Peggy: Everybody needs physical therapy, and they're lying to themselves if they don't think so, because we have misused our bodies. Our shoulders need help. I have a massage therapist. That's the one thing you guys haven't got on your list yet, because they don't do that through Zoom. But that's something I do monthly, or more often if I need to, because our bodies require attention. They are like cars, and the older they get, they need to be tuned up and shined and have the spark plugs changed. What, am I going to get up and step up and down a step holding onto rails? That's the physical therapy. I don't think so. So I knew I needed physical therapy, and I knew I could get healthy advice for how to recover from my surgeries.

My doctors cannot believe I can crawl on my knees. I can do child's pose and get my butt down onto my heels. I can get up and down off the floor without holding onto a chair. But when I first started, I couldn't do those exercises fast enough to have it only be a half hour, because I couldn't get off the floor. I'd say, okay, I think I'll use my exercise ball, because if I get on the floor to do my flies, I won't be able to get up. Now I can climb mountains. I have a paddleboard. You name it, girl. I can do squats. I can get my butt below my knees and stretch.

Nikkiey: And your doctors looking at you during this recovery period?

Peggy: They took videos of me. When I went back for my six months, both of my doctors said, can I video you? Because people need to see that they really don't have to sit in a chair forever. Both my doctor up in Lebanon and my doctor in Nashua, New Hampshire said, your leg is bending at over 120 degrees. Nobody can do that. I said, I'm not nobody. I am Peggy, and my knee bends that much. Because every morning I would wake up and stretch the knee, and I would do your exercises the best I could and modify. And it went from me being able to exercise only one time a week, then two times a week. And I had to tell myself, Peggy, Peggy Ann, you're going to feel better. You are going to do this. And whatever you can do is better than what you could do yesterday.

Nikkiey: Wow.

Peggy: You can do this because you have no option. I didn't even say, if you don't, this is going to happen. I don't want to address it that way. It's, if you do, this is the only way you're going to get to where you want to get. I want to be able to climb mountains. I want to be able to go horseback riding. I haven't done it since I was 18, but that's my new dream. So I want to do those things.

So yes, it was super, super hard, but Stacy walked with me and encouraged me and said, okay, if you can't do 10 minutes, just do five minutes. Do your old workouts if you can't do my workouts. I just want you moving. And once I found the love for moving again, it was easy for me to do three days, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. And recently I've gone to the five-day plan.

Nikkiey: Oh, wow.

Peggy: Monday, Wednesday and Friday whole body, Tuesday and Thursday lower. And then on Saturday and Sunday, I go down to the lake and do water aerobics, where I help other ladies who are infirm.

Nikkiey: Look at you, spreading the message and helping other women on the weekends.

Peggy: Well, I have a good coach and her name is Nikkiey, and I have another one, her name is Stacy, and I'm surrounded by women who are doing that. It's a sacrificial love for sharing what we have, and we live it. You live the message. You don't just talk about it and sit in your little office. You're out there coaching. I noticed your name is on the coach list. You're not just sitting there. Leaders follow, and you're still following after. That inspires me, and my coach is following after too. She finds an article and I find an article, and she says, oh, that's really good. She doesn't say, I already know that.

Nikkiey: Quick break. If you're finding this episode helpful so far, it would mean a lot if you could hit pause for just a second, leave a quick rating or a review, or share it with someone who could benefit from it. Your support helps more women discover these tools to build muscle, lose fat and feel confident. Thank you so much for being a part of this journey with me.

I want to circle back to the nutrition aspect. When you first joined the program, Peggy, what was that like? If you were eating 1,300 calories, how did Stacy integrate you into the macro world with us? Did you start off in a retrain and then work your way up? What did that look like with the nutrition?

Peggy: I'm in retrain for life. I'm half kidding. I've gone from 1,300, and I'm almost at 1,600 calories. We went up a little bit too fast. I gained some weight. I was like, okay, none of this matters with the numbers. It just matters that we can find a way for me to do this without gaining too much weight, and to balance my body. Because I know that I need more fiber. I know that I have to start paying attention to my sodium. Those things all made sense. So it was scary to gain a little bit in the beginning, and then it wasn't scary anymore, because I started to feel so good. Then we were able to tweak, from going to the right macros, to dividing my meals up a little bit better, to then saying, okay, let's add some fiber. It was a layering, and it felt better at every single step.

The biggest thing is my IBS is totally gone.

Nikkiey: Wow.

Peggy: I've been to doctors. They were trying to help me, trying to figure it out. I have no IBS. You could set a clock by me, I'm so healthy in my bowels.

Nikkiey: That's amazing.

Peggy: When I started this program, I had a colonoscopy, and my entire bowel was purple instead of pink from the inflammation I was carrying from not getting enough nutrition. So to me, my full health is more important than the number on the scale. And trust me, I'm a girl who still weighs myself every day. I've been weighing every day since I knew how to read a scale. And I have told myself, I don't need that number. I don't have to. But I enjoy the fact that I can see it even when it's going up, because I look at the fact that all my clothes are fitting and the inside of my bowels is pink.

Nikkiey: Yeah. I mean, that is huge.

Peggy: There's not a doctor that could fix that. I went to a lot of doctors.

Nikkiey: It gave me the chills, because it literally just came down to nutrition and eating better and eating more.

Peggy: And exercise, loving myself, understanding that I'm worth it.

Nikkiey: Amen to that. That's what I want to dive into next. You're 45 weeks in now, and you mentioned earlier that we were the glue. We've given you the step-by-step direction, and like you said, it's layered in. Since joining WarriorBabe 45 weeks ago, tell us mentally and physically where you're at now in your journey. What does your progress look like?

Peggy: I love you, girl. As you get further along, you realize how much more you need the help. When you first start out, you know you want something, and you don't know what you need. And when you start to see actual progress in your body, progress in your mindset, progress in being able to set boundaries where you need to, to make clear decisions, to have unhealthy friends and love them as they are and not get annoyed by things that aren't important, that's bigger to me than my weight.

I can be with some women, I meet them for coffee. Part of my life outside of this, my life ministry, is being with women who've been traumatized or trafficked or been in abusive relationships. So I meet with people, and I have gotten so much insight and wisdom. And the more that I have that, the more that I want to heal me, because if I go through this healing, I can give the person who's with me a whole person. So where I am is hungry to be more centered, more focused, more attentive to my habits first.

And it's not just putting your oxygen mask on first. That's a good one, but that's an emergency thing. This is a lifestyle, WarriorBabe. The mask thing is, oh yeah, you're in an emergency, put your mask on first. Life is, you do it first. You become strong, and people will be able to see it and want it. I had a lady come over today. We did an hour in my pool. She hasn't been exercising for a really long time, and she spent an hour and she can't wait to come back. She said, oh, I didn't even know. It's just a lifestyle of love, that I want to be stronger, to love myself, be grounded.

Now I'm eating about four meals a day. I'm watching that 30 grams of carbs is about the most at each meal. I'm looking at getting one of those Stelo sensors in the next couple of months, just so I can wear it and see the glucose and see the spikes, because I want to know more. And I want to have Stacy and WarriorBabe help me put it together so I can go into my last 30 or 40 years being whole and strong and useful, and not sitting around saying this is too hard. No, it's, I can really do this loving ministry. And I'm still high school teaching. This is going to be my 50th year teaching.

Nikkiey: Wow. What can you not do?

Peggy: I'm going to be an assistant principal for the first time in my life. And I'm doing professional development. It's a fulfilled life.

Nikkiey: Yeah.

Peggy: Everybody has a place inside and a purpose, and it's about finding that purpose and being able to live it. You can't do it unless you take care of yourself. So where am I? I'm hungrier than ever with Stacy to say, okay, great, now we're doing this. We've got the sodium down. I figured out cottage cheese is not my friend, but I found cottage cheese that has almost no sodium in it, so now I'm happy. I found out that chickpeas have too much sodium. There's a place in Canada that sells all these wonderful sprouted beans. Sprouted beans have more enzymes, they're more helpful. So I have this friendship with this company, and I'm buying all my sprouted beans. When I'm doing one thing, I'm doing my exercise, my beans are boiling. It doesn't take any more time. You just have to manage your events so that you can do it. And I'm excited to learn more.

Nikkiey: I love that. I can tell that you're hungry for more. And have you built muscle in the 45 weeks?

Peggy: Yeah.

Nikkiey: Let's go, Peggy.

Peggy: On my Oxaline scale, I don't believe anything about what the numbers are. I don't think it's really 107 pounds or 112 pounds. But the number it had when I first got the scale has gone up by four pounds now. That makes a lot of sense to me. I can see a little bit of definition in my legs, and they're getting back to my 40-year-old sexy legs. So it's a matter of using observation, and data isn't always going to be the scale or the tape measure. But I can see my triceps. I don't know if you can start to see them. I can feel the muscle there. I'm strong. I can pick up my paddleboard and walk the seven minutes down to my lake by myself, and it's an 11-foot paddleboard.

Nikkiey: How does that feel, being 70 years old?

Peggy: I feel like I'm about 40. So be careful.

Nikkiey: I love that.

Peggy: I have to be careful that I don't forget that I'm actually a little older. Not much.

Nikkiey: So for anybody listening to this right now who's thinking, oh, I'm just too old, or my doctor says this is just a normal stage of life or normal symptoms, what would you tell the woman who thinks she's too old to build muscle?

Peggy: I would probably want to hear more from her, so I'd know the right thing to say, because everybody has a different why. I would really sit with that person. Maybe she says, I have grandbabies. I'd be like, oh, that's so cool. What would it feel like if you could go to the amusement park and walk through the whole park with your grandbabies without even being tired? And someone else might say, you know what, I've always wanted my husband and me to walk the Appalachian Trail. I'd say, well, why not? So the first step I would take is to ask and find out their why, because everybody's got one. And the difference between meeting your why, meeting your purpose, and not has to do with what's in here, your heart, to take care of you so you can believe it. I think a lot of times someone just needs to be able to express it and realize that they really can, or see that somebody else really can. That's what I would do.

Nikkiey: I love that. I think that's a really impactful response: hear women out, see where they're at, and then give the response they need to hear for themselves in the moment. As we start to wrap up this interview, I have a couple of last questions. Is there anything I didn't ask that you'd want someone listening right now to know about your journey?

Peggy: I would look somebody right in the eye and tell them, you are worth it. And anything that tells you you're not worth it is a lie. It's time to shed the lies and believe you're worth it. And whatever the it is, is your it. Even if it means you just want to be able to get out and walk your dog, or meet your neighbors, you're worth it.

Nikkiey: If you hadn't made the change for yourself and joined WarriorBabe 45 weeks ago, where do you think you'd be today?

Peggy: At 1,300 calories and sick, because there wasn't any other thing. I was looking at supplements, and there's every supplement in the world, every powder in the world, every food additive. I'm almost off every medication, and almost off all of those stupid green protein things and Vita-this and LMNOP. I have dry beans, and I have OneUp protein because it's a clean protein that I add to my shake. I use the Cabral shakes in the morning, because I learned about them, for nutrition, with berries and a little bit of protein. I feel like I've been watered in the morning. So I have all this to go on. I wouldn't have thought about the nutrition, because I'd be popping all these once-a-day metabolic, whatever goofy things for thousands and thousands of dollars. With real food, I was brought back to what I knew was true. I'm eating real food, and I wouldn't be there otherwise. I would still be searching and spending tons of money on the next promise that came along, whether it's seafood or sea moss. My sister just sent me something the other day about sea moss. I sent her back, Patty, did you ever think about trying a little bit of berries, and maybe mix it up with some beans, and how about some onions and garlic? And I told my sister, I'm addicted to real food.

Nikkiey: I love that. That's good. I'm so happy that you turned it around for yourself. And do you think you would have recovered as fast as you did from your hip replacement and knee replacement?

Peggy: Absolutely not. I would still be going to physical therapy thinking that I need more. And what I needed was something to stretch me, to say, you can do this.

Nikkiey: The IBS, that blew my mind, that your colon was purple from inflammation, and just by eating better and moving more, you're healthy in that area and it's pink.

Peggy: It's pink.

Nikkiey: It's not as stressed out. That gave me chills. It made my heart so happy. So if you had to say anything to a potential WarriorBabe listening to this right now who's thinking about signing up but she's on the fence, what would you tell that babe?

Peggy: Get off the fence. You're not going to know what you're missing unless you do it. Get off the fence. What if it worked and you walked away? What if it really worked? What if it worked like all those women are saying? What if that 70-year-old Peggy Ann was telling the truth and she changed her life? What about all the other people in WarriorBabe? There are so many testimonies. They're not fake. They're real-life people. What if you're missing out by not doing it? What have you got to lose?

Nikkiey: Peggy, thank you. Thank you for that right there. Thank you for possibly changing the life of a listener who's listening to this right now. Your story is proof that no matter what age, you can turn it around. You can put in the work. No matter your background or how stuck you're feeling, your transformation starts with you slowing down, trusting the process and believing in the woman you're becoming and you're meant to be. And now that you're so much more grounded, it's really cool to hear your responses. You can tell that you're grounded, that you're centered, and that you're deeply rooted in self-love, emotionally and spiritually. You want to spread that to anyone and everyone who comes into your circle, which I think is a beautiful thing.

And to any of you listening to this or watching this who are wondering if it's too late for you, Peggy is here to say it's never too late to become what you're destined to be.
