Can You Transform Your Body After 60? Bea's Story

Chapters

In this episode

After two surgeries, seven weeks confined to a couch and a stretch of depression that she numbed with pain pills, whiskey and ice cream, Bea saw herself on TV at a golf tournament and knew something had to change. At 62 she had already looked at keto, intermittent fasting and near-vegan eating, and none of it made sense to her. What finally got her attention was seeing women her age and older in the WarriorBabe community with real muscle.

In this conversation with Nikkiey Stott, Bea explains why her logical, data-driven mind decided to trust the process, follow her plan exactly and measure everything. When she and Coach Claire tried a cut, her heart rate variability crashed, showing her body was under far more stress than she felt. Instead of pushing through, they moved her to a higher maintenance level of about 2,000 calories, added breath work and non-sleep deep rest, and she gave up alcohol. In roughly 10 months she lost 14 pounds of fat and gained about four to five pounds of muscle.

If you think it's too late, or that fat loss is only about macros and workouts, Bea's story is worth your time. She talks about why sleep, hydration and stress matter as much as the plan, why this isn't a microwave program, and why she would rather invest in her health now than in doctor visits and a walker later.

Key takeaways

  • Bea lost 14 pounds of fat and gained about four to five pounds of muscle over roughly 10 months while eating at a maintenance level of about 2,000 calories.
  • Follow your plan exactly as written, because Bea points out you can't know whether something works unless you actually do what it says.
  • Use a body composition scale for trends in fat mass and muscle mass rather than relying on scale weight alone, which Bea calls a liar.
  • Feeling fine doesn't mean your body isn't stressed: Bea's heart rate variability crashed when she started a cut, so she and her coach backed out and raised her calories.
  • Bea does a short non-sleep deep rest (NSDR) meditation after lunch every day and uses breath work to bring her stress down.
  • Bea gave up alcohol, going 103 days without it using the Reframe app, and swapped it for key lime juice with Sprite Zero.
  • Don't fear carbs: Bea eats a banana in her post-workout smoothie plus potatoes and rice to hit her targets.
  • Sleep, hydration and stress matter as much as macros and workouts, and Bea says ignoring them is why so many women don't lose fat.

Questions answered

Is it too late to transform your body after 60?

Bea joined WarriorBabe at 62 after two surgeries and months of immobility. Within about 10 months she had lost 14 pounds of fat and gained about four to five pounds of muscle, and she plans to keep going for another year.

How did Bea lose fat while eating more food?

After her body showed signs of stress during a cut, she and Coach Claire moved her to a higher maintenance level of about 2,000 calories. In that maintenance phase she lost 14 pounds of fat and her body started putting on muscle.

Can stress stop you from losing fat or building muscle?

Bea's view is that if she didn't get her stress under control, she'd be swimming in cortisol all day and wouldn't make gains. Her heart rate variability crashed during a cut even though she felt fine, and she says measuring stress is what made her progress possible.

Why did Bea decide against keto, vegan eating and intermittent fasting?

She felt keto had too much fat and not enough carbs or vegetables, and that vegan eating didn't give her the protein she knew she needed. Intermittent fasting felt okay at first, but once she started working out she felt she needed food on board, and she didn't want to fit herself into what she calls a weirdo program.

What is NSDR and how does Bea use it?

NSDR is a non-sleep deep rest meditation that Bea describes as supposed to be almost as good as sleep. She does a short one after lunch every day using the Insight Timer app and says it rejuvenates her body.

Full transcript

Nikkiey: Before you found WarriorBabe, what was your health and fitness situation like then?

Bea: It was tragic. WarriorBabe gives you an opportunity to accomplish all your goals without having to fit into a certain weirdo program. My weight, it went down. I've lost 14 pounds of fat and I put on a crap ton of muscle. It's an investment in your future.

Nikkiey: Hey, everyone. So today I've got another WarriorBabe here with us, WarriorBabe Bea. After facing two surgeries, months of immobility and battling depression, Bea knew something had to change. But instead of turning to what a lot of people would end up doing, another quick fix diet, she committed to learning how to truly heal from the inside out. And with help from the amazing coach that she has at WarriorBabe and the WarriorBabe community, she's lost body fat, she's revealed her strength, and she discovered the power of regulating her nervous system. And now she's thriving and doing everything she can to live a long, vibrant and empowered life. And I have her here to be able to share her story. Welcome, Bea.

Bea: Hey, thank you, Nikkiey.

Nikkiey: So let's dive in first. How old are you? Where are you from? And what do you do for work now?

Bea: Okay, sure. I am 63. I joined WarriorBabe when I was 62. I live in a small town on Lake Guntersville, Alabama. And I actually day trade right now for a living. I trade foreign exchange and futures. So I can sit on my butt for a couple hours a day and do my work, and then I can go do WarriorBabe stuff.

Nikkiey: Very cool. I didn't get that insight before catching up here, but that's super cool. Awesome. Okay, let's dive into where you were before you found WarriorBabe. What was your health and fitness situation like then?

Bea: It was tragic. I would say critical red flag. I had had knee surgery in January, and that was from an injury I obtained when I was in my 20s. We won't go into that. And then six months later, I had back surgery, because when I moved up here to semi-retire, I took up golf. My golf instructor, young whippersnapper dude, decided I needed to swing like Rory McIlroy when I'm a 60-year-old woman.

Nikkiey: Oh, no.

Bea: And physiologically, I don't move like that. So that was the second herniated disc surgery I had in 10 years. But the bad part was, I'm in a rural location now, so until I could get back to Birmingham to my surgeon, I had to go through some different rural medical providers up here to get an MRI or a referral. For people that have had back injuries, they'll get this. I was confined to the couch. The bed didn't work. Standing didn't work for very long. Walking wasn't comfortable. I couldn't ride in the car. So I was on the couch for seven weeks. It was mental depression for real. I popped Lortab, and because I was depressed, I drank a lot of whiskey and I chased it with ice cream. So when I came out of all that and after my surgery, for me, I had put on a lot of weight.

And we went to the Solheim Cup. I don't know if you're familiar with that. I know you golf, but it's where all the women golfers play, the U.S. golfers and the European golfers. And I actually ended up getting on television and saw myself on the TV screen when I got home. And I was like, oh my Lord, what's happened to me?

Nikkiey: Why didn't I know I was talking to a celebrity here, Bea?

Bea: No, no, no. My little stint of fame was just long enough to show that, oh my God, I look like the people that were walking around there that I didn't want to look like. And I'm like, I don't want to look like that. I don't want to be like that. And there I was, looking and being just like that. Nothing wrong with that. Just for me, it wasn't my thing.

And I had studied, Nikkiey. I've heard all your other WarriorBabes that have gone through this. They looked at keto, they looked at this, they looked at that. And none of it made sense to me. There was even this little guy named Dr. Greger who was all about everything whole food. You don't need a lot of protein, it's all whole food, don't eat anything that's processed. And nothing really made sense. I thought, well, I'm going to have more protein than that.

So I was flipping through Facebook, of course, where your ads show up. But the thing that got me wasn't you. It was a bunch of these old ladies like me that were popping muscles. And I'm like, oh my gosh. My thing is, if somebody else can do it, I can do it.

Nikkiey: Amen to that.

Bea: And so I went and did a little form, and I thought, okay, wait a minute, this is high ticket sales. So there's something to this, because they wouldn't be doing high ticket sales if it wasn't a for-real program. I thought, okay, well, I'll get on the call and see what they have to say.

Nikkiey: You're a smart cookie, Bea. You operate in a very logical mind. That's a very smart assessment. First of all, let me backtrack a little bit to the moments where you found yourself on the couch. Seven weeks. Being depressed. Having the whiskey and chasing it with the ice cream. First of all, I thank you for sharing that story, because I'm sure a lot of women have been in that position before, where they felt like there was no going up. It felt like you were just stuck and you were going through a very hard period of your life. And then to see yourself the way you didn't want to see yourself, and you're like, dude, I need a change. And then you found us at WarriorBabe. And I love that mentality: if somebody else can do it, I can do it too.

I want to go back, because I'm sure a lot of women listening to this may be feeling like they're in the same boat, and I'd love to connect with them and let them know they're not alone. What kind of thoughts were going through your mind when you were in that really dark place emotionally, on the couch for seven weeks straight?

Bea: It was horrible. The first time I got to go out in a car, I cried just going down the street, because I was actually getting to go out. But to be confined to a couch, it's really rough. Your pastor's coming over, he's praying for you. This Episcopalian, he's putting a cross on your head. I thought, Lord, am I dying? I'm just trying to get to my surgery. And people are bringing things, and you feel like, oh my God. But yeah, it's the mentality of feeling hopeless. And I bet a lot of your WarriorBabes out there, if this does help somebody, the hopeless feeling is where I was. And I was very depressed.

And again, when you look at all the things that are out there, everybody cites a study here, a study there. And they can bend those studies to make them be whatever they want in order to sell you whatever they want. And that's the problem. You really have to test something out for yourself. But I was extremely depressed. It was awful until I had my surgery.

Of course, once I had my surgery, the bad thing was I'd had a previous surgery. The surgeon, he's a really good surgeon down in Birmingham, said, well, there's a good chance you're going to have a spinal fluid leak. You're a nurse, you know that. And you're going to have to lay flat on your back for three more days. And yeah, that happened. And I thought, there's no way I can lay here three more days in the hospital. But I did. And I made it out. And so then it was like, where do I go from here? And the rehab part was part of finding you guys, and that really helped.

But that mentality of just feeling hopeless, I think a lot of people can find themselves in that spot. They've tried everything in the world, and they just feel hopeless as all get out. And they don't know who to believe. One of the things that you like to say, and I'm going back and listening to your Macro Hours, is believe me now and I'll prove it to you later. And I thought, well, all right then, we'll go there and see what happens.

Nikkiey: Oh, man, I love that you quoted that. Yes. Trust us now, believe us later. And I am grateful that you did, hearing your story here now. You were at a low, low, low point. A lot of women can find themselves at a low point. It feels so heavy in that moment when you're going through it. And as you mentioned, being hopeless and depressed, it almost feels like there's no way out. And then you found WarriorBabe, and it was the other women. What was resonating with you, what were they saying when you saw those videos, that you were then able to turn it around and make it a part of your recovery journey with us?

Bea: It really wasn't what they were saying. It was what they were showing. You can say one thing all day long, but when you show the before and afters, and you show older women than me, they were in shape.

Nikkiey: We have women in the community that are like 77 years old.

Bea: Exactly. I'm like, okay, I've got a third of my life left. I'm going to look like that. I'm going to be able to do that. You always talk about your choices now. Invest now or invest later. You're going to invest now in something that's going to make you healthy, or you're going to invest later in your medical bills. So one or the other, make your choice. I'm like, all right, well, I'm investing now. I've got the money. Let's do it. Let's make the investment. It's just like paying health insurance. It's cheaper than the stupid weight loss whatever. Anyway. So no, it was the pictures of the old ladies. I call them old ladies, they're my age. The old farts that are out there looking great. And I'm like, yeah, I want that.

Nikkiey: Oh, I love that. I love that that's your mentality. You saw that and you're like, I can have that too.

You mentioned a bit ago that you explored keto and intermittent fasting and even almost vegan eating as well. I saw that you wrote that in the bio to come on to this interview with me. What made you question those methods?

Bea: Keto didn't make sense. It was too much. It's just too much fat. There's too much protein, there's too much fat. There weren't enough carbs. There weren't enough green vegetables. I know you get this, because I've been listening to you a lot going back to your The WarriorBabe Show. We were given vegetables to eat, right? You might not like vegetables, but one of our first foods was vegetables. I'm like, well, why don't we have vegetables in here?

Nikkiey: I'm learning to love vegetables again, Bea.

Bea: Good for you. They're very healthy. So anyway, that's one of the first things we're told to eat. I said, why don't we have vegetables? I don't know how people are eating, and they're going into ketosis. That scared the crap out of me. And I thought, okay, that's not what I want to do. It doesn't make sense. You can quote studies all day long to sell your stuff, but intuitively, that Holy Spirit kind of thing said, no, that's not where it's at.

The vegan thing, yeah, I got really close. And it was like, well, I need protein. I know I need protein. I'm built to eat protein. My teeth show you that we were designed to eat meat. And so that just didn't make sense either.

The intermittent fasting, that kind of was okay, because if you look at all the stuff, it said it kind of cleanses your system and blah, blah, blah. But when you start working out, you're like, I need some stuff on board. I'm not sure that eating within a window is the right thing for me to do either. But WarriorBabe gives you an opportunity to accomplish all your goals without having to fit into what I like to call a weirdo program. You're living your life. And that was a pleasant surprise. It was like, oh, I can live my life and still accomplish my goals without having to do some of this crazy crap that people have out there on the internet that they're proving with one study. That doesn't make sense.

Nikkiey: Right. And to the study point too, with intermittent fasting, the majority of the studies have only been done on men. They haven't been tested on females. And we're so much more complex. Intermittent fasting can throw off so many of the hormonal profiles inside of women, but there aren't many studies that show that. It's just what people decide they want to speak on or don't want to speak on. I don't mean to go down the spiral, but you know how I am about all these things. One thing intermittent fasting can do is totally throw off the thyroid profile for women. People want to do intermittent fasting and then wonder why they have thyroid problems. And the thyroid is literally the gatekeeper for all of the internal systems and making it all work in our body. It's crazy. Okay, end my spiral there.

Anyway, I'm curious about one thing. You're 63, you were 62 when you joined WarriorBabe. Why would you take advice from a 37-year-old woman? What made it feel like we knew what we were talking about at WarriorBabe?

Bea: Okay, so here's the deal. I thought, all right, I've tried everything else. Like I said, there are old ladies that are getting results. I went on the intake interview and I thought, okay, they match you up with a coach. So accountability was something I thought would be very helpful. And the whole macro thing I'd never tried before. My thing was, all right, I'll give it a year. And now I've re-upped for another year. So I'll give it a year, but I want to be able to measure it. One thing you're going to learn about me is, if you can't measure it, you don't know if you're making progress.

Nikkiey: I picked that up the second I started talking to you. That's how you function.

Bea: Yeah, the numbers first. And then you mentioned all the other things, and I'm like, okay, this makes sense. But really, people know stepping on scales is not measuring it, right? You know that. But even calipers aren't measuring it that great, because you're so inconsistent. Taking measurements with a measuring tape, that's not that consistent either. You've got to measure it. So I thought, I can measure this, and I'm going to do what they say, but I'm going to measure it. And I'm going to be consistent about what they say, because the only way I will know if it's working is if I do exactly what they say.

Nikkiey: Exactly.

Bea: You don't know if it works unless you do exactly what they say to do. And you matched me up with an awesome coach, and we can talk about how she worked into where I went with this. So I started doing what y'all said, and I got what I call the fancy scale. It's a Starfit scale. It's not a hundred percent accurate, but it'll show trends. It shows body fat, actually fat mass. It shows muscle mass. It shows all that. So I knew I could get a trend. I'm not going to get dunked in a pool of water every week to figure out what's going on. So it's something I can step on that will actually give me the real measurements I'm looking for. I know you talk a lot about the scale. The scale's a liar, so you don't want to just use a scale. But this scale actually tracks the things I wanted to track, like muscle mass and body fat.

So that's why I decided to go ahead and jump with WarriorBabe and believe, because, well, what else do I have? I've tried everything else. And you had all these coaches, you're high ticket sales, it's been working for years. There's got to be something to this besides here's a bunch of videos, follow what we do, and hopefully you'll make it or not. That's not what I was looking for.

Nikkiey: So it seems like you were skeptical at first, right? Because it's high ticket sales. You already peeled back the cover just from the advertising and the feel of it. And as you're alluding to, some things changed your mind. Is that what helped you take the leap? We've been in business for eight years, this seems to be working, there's a foundation underneath it, you see the women getting the results. Is that what made you finally say, all right, I trust this, nothing else has worked, so I might as well give it my all?

Bea: Well, absolutely. For the people that are listening, look, if they're in a program that's high ticket sales and they've been helping all these women and they've been around for years, there's something to it. You can't do this at that level and maintain success if you're not getting results for your clients. So that's what I believe in.

Nikkiey: Oh, wow. I love that you shared that. I think that's a very logical way of looking at it. And of the almost 50 interviews I've done with WarriorBabes, it's never been said or alluded to that way. There are obviously eight years of success behind the brand. It's working for women. I totally get the skepticism at first. There have been women who said they waited a month, or three months, because they felt like this was just another thing out there. But clearly, once you get on the inside and you see everything it's made of, and your coach, who we'll definitely talk about in a second, Claire, and then you're 11 months in and you've bought another year, it's real on the back end. So you started working with Coach Claire.

Bea: Yep. Coach Claire, sweet. When you asked me what kind of coach I wanted, I said, well, just give me anybody. I don't care. They can yell at me if they want to. I don't really care. But she doesn't do any of that. You gave me the total antithesis of what I said you could give me, but it worked out. So God was listening.

So Claire got me in retrain, and I dropped a bunch of weight, and I got down to the weight I'd been at for like a hundred years. But that's the scale weight. So I was dropping body fat and I wasn't putting muscle on yet. And we thought we were in maintenance. That came around January or something. And what I had done was, I had a Fitbit and I switched to an Apple Watch. Now, this is what changed everything, honestly. The Fitbit had been tracking my sleep, and I needed something to track my sleep with the Apple Watch. So I started Googling, and it came up with Welltory. I don't know if you've ever heard of Welltory.

Nikkiey: No, I've never heard of Welltory.

Bea: Oh my gosh, Nikkiey, you've got to look at Welltory. I think it works off of different things. It works off of Oura rings, all kinds of stuff. What it'll do is pull data from MyFitnessPal, your Apple Watch or ring, what have you, and it brings it all in. Welltory has been used by many universities to do studies. They have 10 million users. I didn't know any of this. What Welltory does is track your heart rate variability. And HRV is a big deal. It says NASA astronauts use it, Olympic athletes use it. And I thought, okay, well, if it's good for them, it's good for me. I'm just a regular lady.

Nikkiey: Heck yeah. Very important piece of data.

Bea: Exactly. So we thought we were in maintenance, and then we went to a cut. And my HRV...

Nikkiey: Plummeted?

Bea: Yes. It crashed. My body said, you are physiologically stressed out. Because one of the questions we answer on a weekly basis is, how's your stress? And I'm like, I'm not stressed. I'm great. But my body was stressed. I had no earthly idea. And I started looking more into it. Welltory is attached to ChatGPT. So the thing will pull all your data over, and you can ask it, why does my score look like it does? And it will spit out what you ate the day before, your sleep, your rest. And then it'll recommend a plan. And the plan for me was, you need to start meditating, you need to do breath work. And I'm like, what the heck is that? Well, of course, my coach, Claire, is all about that. She just breathes that. So it was perfect.

She said, all right, let's back out of here. And she was willing to experiment with me. So I'm like a human experiment with this Welltory thing now. That was back in January, February. So we backed out and started moving toward a different maintenance level, which is more calories than what we thought I needed. And we've finally gotten there. It's taken about 10 months. My weight went down. I've lost 14 pounds of fat and I put on a crap ton of muscle. I'm up to about four or five pounds of muscle. In this maintenance phase, my body is putting on muscle like crazy. It is loving it.

Nikkiey: This is music to my ears, Bea. Music to my ears.

Bea: But the thing, Nikkiey, is, well, if I don't get my stress under control, I'm just swimming in cortisol all day long. And if I'm swimming in cortisol all day long, I'm not going to have any gains.

And then there's your thing on alcohol. And then the surgeon general comes out and says we need to put a label on alcohol. And of course I'm like, why am I drinking this stuff? It's right up there with asbestos. It's right up there with cigarette smoke. It's a class one carcinogen. I thought, it's just liquid poison. Honestly, it's a poison liquid, but it's just a liquid. Why do I have to drink this? I can drink something else. The only reason you drink alcohol is for some other issue than that it tastes good. And if people tell you it tastes good, they're really drinking it for something else, because you can drink all kinds of things that taste good.

Nikkiey: Facts. Say it louder for the people in the back.

Bea: Yeah. I do key lime juice and Sprite now. It's Sprite Zero, and it is awesome.

Nikkiey: Love that.

Bea: So anyway, stress can be measured. And I'm like, okay, we can measure this now, so let's start measuring it. And we started doing some meditation, the NSDR thing. I'm sure you're familiar with that. It's helping. Breath work's bringing it down, and Claire is a master of that. And of course, I had some trauma as a child, and now we're getting into somatic therapy stuff. So we're getting to a point where I'm kind of leveling out. And I've got a cruise coming up, and after the cruise we're going to try a cut. But that's why I want to stick around for another year, because I want to do a cut and a build and a cut and a build. Right now things are kind of happening. But it never would have happened if I hadn't been able to measure stress. Measuring anything is the key. You can't change it until you can really measure it, I think, and see where you're at.

Nikkiey: I'm blown away by your journey.

When you unpack that and look at it at a high level: 11 months, and you haven't done a cut. You tried to, but your body was like, whoa, I'm not ready for that yet. So you're going to go into a cut after you come back, most likely around your second year with us. In that first year, did you think that a fitness program would lead you to meditation and breath work?

Bea: Absolutely not. But my theory is, okay, I'm learning some new stuff. I've been at this 153 weight for, well, I've had several driver's licenses with it on there now. I thought, what's a little longer? What does it matter, as long as I'm learning what I need to learn in order to progress in the future? So if I have to sit here another six months and learn this crap, well, not crap, good stuff, and get it straight so I can make progress in the future, it's worth it. What's a little longer? It's not that much longer. You've been here forever. Why not go a little bit longer and learn what you need to learn in order to make the progress you need to make in the future?

Nikkiey: Yeah. And just think, after two years you're going to have a lot of tools under your belt that you didn't have before, that you can really use and navigate, because it's been set up specifically for how you needed to go on your fitness journey. Results that not only show physically, but that also calm your nervous system down internally so you're not as stressed as you were before. Man, that's super cool. And along the way, in maintenance, you lost 14 pounds. So you lost weight by eating more food, right?

Bea: Absolutely.

Nikkiey: Where are your calories at now? Are you hanging out in maintenance right now?

Bea: I'm right at about 2,000.

Nikkiey: For those of you that aren't watching on video and are just listening to the audio, my jaw just dropped. Did you ever imagine that you'd be eating 2,000 calories?

Bea: No. And the hard part is getting all the carbs in. It's like, dang, I've got more carbs I've got to eat. What the heck?

Nikkiey: Oh, what are your favorite carb sources? What do you like to eat carb-wise?

Bea: I put a banana in my workout smoothie after I work out, and potatoes, the stuff people don't want to eat. Potatoes, rice, all the good stuff. That kind of stuff.

Nikkiey: So circling back, what were the first signs that your body was improving? What were you seeing when things were finally starting to respond? How did it feel, after you'd been through so much physically and emotionally? How did you know your stress was lowering, outside of Welltory? What did it feel like?

Bea: Actually, Welltory is what I needed. For me, psychologically, the feeling wasn't any different. I'd wake up feeling great one morning, but physiologically, you don't know what your body's doing. Welltory will actually show me. It recommends that if your heart rate variability is not at 30%, don't work out, you need to rest that day. It'll actually tell you when you need to have a rest day or when you're good to go. So psychologically, it wasn't that big of a difference. That's why I was having such a hard time, because I felt fine. I'm like, I don't have any stress. But physiologically, my body had a whole other story. And until I had something to actually show me what it was doing, I had no clue.

Now that I'm improving, well, the whole somatic therapy, that's a whole other issue. But I feel, I guess, lighter. I don't know how to describe it. Things are more enjoyable. And I think it's getting rid of the alcohol. I haven't had alcohol in 103 days now. I'm using the Reframe app for that. I love apps. I love technology.

Nikkiey: You love your data.

Bea: I do. I love my data.

Nikkiey: Oh, I love that. I'm definitely going to check out Welltory. I'm intrigued by what you're saying and how it's helped you. And no alcohol, that's huge. A lot of people struggle with giving that up. We've talked about a lot so far. What would you say have been your top achievements in the last 11 months?

Bea: I think the main thing is coming to the realization that there's more to this than just macros and workouts. Y'all preach it all the time, but people don't believe it. Sleep, hydration, stress, all that stuff. That's the main reason people don't lose the fat. I'm not going to say weight. They don't lose the fat they think they're going to lose, because they're not paying attention to the holistic approach. WarriorBabe gives you a holistic approach. You come in here going, I'm going to lose weight, or I'm going to lose fat. And then, if you stick to it and you listen and you plug in, you learn that there's way more to this. And that's why I sat at 153 for a hundred years. 153 with 99 pounds of muscle. And now I'm at 153 with 104 point something pounds of muscle. It's a whole different story.

Nikkiey: Wow. More food.

Bea: So there's more to it. You know why people join, but if they can at least be exposed to the other things, there's more to this journey than just the macros. All in all, I'm getting better sleep, I'm hydrated, all those good things you guys teach.

Nikkiey: What's your HRV now? And by the way, for anybody listening, when she says a number, there are age ranges for HRV, but it's still a very individualized number based on the stress and lifestyle that one leads. I'm curious, what's your HRV?

Bea: It varies day to day. I measure it every morning. You're supposed to take a morning measurement, and that way you can gauge what happened yesterday and that kind of thing. The morning before last was my lowest stress. My HRV was actually a hundred. When you look at Welltory, you'll see this little stress score, and it was down to 14. My parasympathetic was way over my sympathetic. And my HRV used to be like 14, 15. It was in the toilet.

Nikkiey: I'm curious, do you remember what your HRV was around when you were drinking alcohol? What that looked like?

Bea: Back then, yeah, I was at like 14 when I first discovered it. I was still drinking alcohol when I was trying to do that cut. That wasn't good.

Nikkiey: I can't imagine.

Bea: I wasn't drinking a lot. I'd have a glass of wine. But still.

Nikkiey: A glass can still totally impact it. Your heart rate increases and your HRV plummets, just from having a glass. That's what the data will tell you. And that's why it's cool that you have a data-driven mind and you love that, because it lets you be objective about what you're reading instead of subjective. That is so important. It's really important, and this conversation is really getting at that. You're really understanding at a core level how your nervous system has changed, and now you're approaching it differently as you continue on with your fitness journey.

Bea: Absolutely.

Nikkiey: How would you describe your relationship with your body now compared to before?

Bea: What a question. I think I'm more kind to my body. I consider what it needs more. I don't push through things. I try to do an NSDR, a non-sleep deep rest meditation, from Insight Timer. If people have never heard of Insight Timer, Claire turned me on to it. Welltory did too.

Nikkiey: I'm writing all these down. This is awesome.

Bea: Insight Timer. Claire's been using Insight Timer for a year. And the Welltory chatbot, it's ChatGPT, and that thing is awesome for your health. Anyway, it said you might want to try some Insight Timer. A non-sleep deep rest is supposed to be almost as good as sleep, if you've never done NSDR. So I do a short one after lunch every day. I make myself do it, and it rejuvenates my body. I used to push through everything. I don't push through things now. I take things slower. I was always really fast at everything.

Nikkiey: So less is more?

Bea: Less is more, for real.

Nikkiey: So the things we say at WarriorBabe and the videos you've watched, would you say they're pretty accurate?

Bea: Absolutely. 100%.

Nikkiey: Is there anything I didn't ask you today that you would want the listeners to know about your journey with us?

Bea: I think the main thing is, you can measure everything WarriorBabe is telling you. You just need to find out where you measure. And if you're a babe in the community already, you need to measure your stress, because that could be killing your results and you don't even know it.

Nikkiey: You mentioned a cortisol bath.

Bea: Yeah. We're living in a cortisol bath.

Nikkiey: That can really hinder your progress.

Bea: Yeah, it did. It does.

Nikkiey: It sounds like you've got really good control of your health again. How does that feel?

Bea: That feels great. The one thing I think all this has done for me is give me hope. And I'm building a foundation. You talk about that a lot in your The WarriorBabe Show things. You build a foundation, and that takes time. This isn't a microwave program. This is building a foundation. I wish I'd found this when I was 35. I'm 62. But I've got 30 more years, plus hopefully, of some golf. And I plan to play.

Nikkiey: We have to come down to Alabama and do some golfing with you.

Bea: Absolutely. You play golf. Come on, girl. I'm pretty good, too. For a girl, I'm pretty good. You can play in the senior scramble. I call it the old fart scramble. You'll be my guest.

Nikkiey: Oh, we're going to have a good time. You've got many years ahead of you, Bea. Many years ahead of you. And I'm just grateful that you found us and that you saw it was possible for you, since other women were achieving the results you wanted to achieve. What I think is really cool is you went in trusting us now and believing us later. You went in saying, I've got to do what they're saying if I want measurable data on the outcome and make it as true as possible. And it's really cool to see what you've accomplished in 11 months. And now you have a whole other year to go, which is even cooler. Think about everything you've accomplished now, and what more you can accomplish in a year.

If somebody is on the fence right now thinking about WarriorBabe, what would you tell them? Someone who's skeptical, who's seeing these ads, seeing everything. Skepticism is totally normal. But knowing the life-changing experience you've had on the inside, what would you tell someone who's on the fence?

Bea: I would say this. The reason they're probably on the fence is because of the investment. And my theory, like I said before, is you can invest now or you're going to invest later. The choice is yours. You're going to invest with doctor visits. You're going to invest with your cholesterol out of whack. You're going to invest, like you like to say, in a walker. So I would rather invest now while I'm still employed and can do things, and learn a skill set, like you say, that will last me the rest of my life. Now, you might stay in WarriorBabe forever. Stay and learn the skill set. But it's an investment in your future. So if you have the means to do it, by all means, do it. I didn't mean for it to come out that way, but that's kind of cool.

Nikkiey: That is pretty cool. I've never heard it that way. I love that. If you have the means to do it, by all means, do it. I think that's spot on. You're going to invest in it some way or another. You might as well invest in a way that's going to help you, rather than in a way that's going to be an uphill battle. I've seen it one too many times in nursing and in that world. And I think you hit the nail on the head. Instead of investing in a walker, invest in yourself right now to get the answers you need.

Bea, it's been a pleasure. You're such a cool person. What I also noticed is that your energy, your vibe, is very calm. You can tell the work you've put in for yourself over the last year, knowing where you came from. And for anyone listening, Bea's transformation isn't just about changing her body. It's about reclaiming her life. She learned that stress isn't always loud, but when left unchecked, it can hold you back from becoming the person you're meant to be. Your story is super powerful. I hope a lot of women have taken away some things from you, and if nothing else, some of these cool apps, which I'm definitely going to go check out. Bea, thank you for being here, and thank you for sharing your story. I appreciate your time.

Bea: Yes, ma'am. Thank you.
