How to Stay Motivated When People Judge Your Fitness Goals

When you start eating differently, getting up early to train and saying no to nights out, people notice. Some won't like it. In this solo mindset episode, Nikkiey Stott explains why that pushback comes with doing something great for yourself. She says it usually comes from other people's discomfort and has nothing to do with you. She shares how to protect your goals with a mental bubble, or better, a force field, that other people's opinions can't get through.
The core shift is language. Nikkiey argues that calling your new habits a sacrifice makes them harder than they are, while seeing them as an investment in your future self changes how you act. She uses her own early choices, like skipping drinks with friends to wake up clear-headed, to explain delayed gratification. You don't have to say no every time, but saying no most of the time compounds over months and years.
She also gives practical ways to handle unsupportive people. Put friends who keep criticizing your choices at a distance, and have a straight, honest conversation with your partner and family. Then find someone who already has the results you want, whether that's a coach or this podcast, and make the investments they made.
Key takeaways
- Stop calling your new habits a sacrifice, because Nikkiey says the way you talk to yourself is how you act, and that language makes things feel harder than they are.
- Build a strong mental bubble, or force field, around your goals so other people's opinions and criticism can't knock you off track.
- Recognize that judgment about your workouts or eating usually comes from other people's own discomfort and has nothing to do with you.
- Put friends who keep criticizing your choices at a distance instead of feeling you have to end the friendship.
- With a partner or close family, sit down and have a direct conversation explaining that you're doing this for you and want to feel confident in your own skin.
- Embrace delayed gratification: you don't have to say no every time, but saying no most of the time compounds into results over months and years.
- Skipping a night of drinks is an investment in waking up clear-minded, training hard and hitting your meals instead of losing days to recovery and snacking.
- Find someone who already has the results you want and make the same investments they made, trusting that the payoff is coming.
Questions answered
Why do people judge me when I start working out and eating healthier?
Nikkiey explains that when people see you striving for something and getting results, it makes them uncomfortable and, at a subconscious level, they feel they aren't good enough. She says it comes from their own thought process and has nothing to do with you.
How should I handle an unsupportive partner or family member?
Nikkiey suggests sitting down with them and having a straight, honest conversation explaining that you're doing this for you and want to feel better in your own skin. She says a loving, supportive partner or family should understand and ease up on the negativity.
What should I do about friends who keep criticizing my fitness choices?
Nikkiey says you don't have to stop being friends with them. Just put them at a distance if their opinions keep being unsupportive, like telling you to skip the gym.
Do I have to say no to every night out to get results?
No. Nikkiey says you don't have to say no every time, but saying no the majority of the time creates a compounding effect that shows up in the months and years to come.
Why do I keep giving up on my fitness goals?
According to Nikkiey, if you only focus on what you're missing out on or giving up, you become obsessed with it, and that's where you break. Seeing your choices as an investment in your future body and health makes them much easier to stick with.

Nikkiey: Inside the bubble is your world. You know what you're going after. You know that all these things that you're doing are positive for you with the results you want to see. And you cannot allow anybody to pop that bubble around you.
What's up, you guys? Welcome to The WarriorBabe Show with Nikkiey Stott, co-founder and brand personality of WarriorBabe, where we talk about mindset, methodologies, and tactics that will help you lose body fat, build muscle, be strong, and feel insanely confident.
I am your host, Nikkiey Stott, and welcome, guys, to episode number 14. I'm excited for this one. We're going to dive into the mindset pillar. I'm going to talk about sacrifice versus investment.
But before I dive into speaking about that: if you guys are on this journey to build muscle, to lose body fat, and you're doing things different than what you've been doing, and if you want to win, guess what? You are going to be controversial. There is going to be controversy all around you. When you see people hating, when you see people talking about you, when you see people not agreeing with what you're doing, "Oh, you're spending all this time working out, you're eating this way," the setbacks that you encounter, this is all a part of the controversy of doing something great for yourself.
And a big reason why you guys care so, so, so much about all of this stuff going on around you, if people don't agree with you, if people talk about you, if people hate on you because of the new actions that you're doing that are in alignment with the goals you want to accomplish, it's because you want acknowledgement, which is the opposite of what you're getting. You want recognition, which is the opposite. Typically, at the beginning of your journey, when you're setting out and doing different things than what you've been doing, you're basically embarking on a different identity from what people know you as, right? You're getting the opposite of acknowledgement and recognition, which is what you truly want.
But when someone takes it from you before you even win, you guys, if you allow all of those opinions, all of the non-agreements, all of the talking about you, all of the hate, all of the "Why are you doing this? Why are you spending this much time?" If you allow all of that to get to you, those people are taking it from you before you even win on the results you want, before you even get what you want. And that can seriously wound you, and that can seriously stop you dead in your tracks from continuing on the rest of your journey. If somebody doesn't agree with you, if someone's talking about you, if someone is asking why you're doing this, and you allow those opinions to get into your own mind and start changing your own thought processes, it's literally just going to stop you dead in your tracks.
You have to be a strong individual. And that's what I'm going to help you do in this podcast: crush all of that nonsense coming from other people and just solely focus on what you want. That's the premise of this whole podcast today. You are doing this for you. No one else. I just want to repeat that. You are doing this entire journey that you are on for you. Nobody else. No one is in your head. No one sees the goals that you want to accomplish. Nobody understands it more than you, because you have emotion, you have feeling, everything attached to that goal you see in your brain. Nobody can see that. Okay, so you are literally doing this for you. No one else.
And guess what? In the end, it's going to affect others in a better way. All of these people who have all these things to say about what you're doing right now, I guarantee you, a year into your journey, it's going to affect them in a better way. They're going to come to you. They're going to ask you what you're doing. Those other people may not see that right now, and I'm going to explain this more in a bit.
But as you're on this journey for you, it's all about progression. You are progressing here. And you are doing more than what you are doing right now to get different results. So everything that you're changing up, how you eat, what time you're waking up in the morning to go work out, you're doing more than what you were doing to get different results.
And guess what, guys? As you do that, as you wake up at 5 a.m., as you're packing all of your meals, you're going to be judged. When those around you see you striving for something, they see you getting after it and getting results, it makes them uncomfortable. Deep down, at a subconscious level, they think that they are not good enough. It has absolutely nothing to do with you. All of the things that you're doing, all of the actions that you're taking, waking up at 5 a.m., changing your nutritional plan, if you really think about it, those are positive things. Yet some people have all of these negative things to say about it. And it's because it makes them uncomfortable. It is coming from their own thought process, and they're spilling it onto you.
And this is where you need to have, as I used to say to the clients I worked with, a bubble around you. A positive bubble around you, where inside the bubble is your world. You know what you're going after. You know that all these things that you're doing are positive for you with the results you want to see. And you cannot allow anybody to pop that bubble around you. Everybody's got these needles. Everybody's got these thorns. Everyone's got these opinions. But your bubble is so strong. Okay? Maybe I should say something different, because a bubble can be easily popped. You have a force field around you. And anybody who pricks at it gets electrocuted. Okay?
But you have to make this sacrifice. This is what's so hard, right? This is all part of the progress. It's that controversy: your mom may not understand what you're doing. Your husband may not understand what you're doing. All of these people, like I'm saying, have all of these things to say towards you. The people that you work with may not understand what you're doing because you can't eat the french fries at lunch. Or, not that you can't. You just choose not to. This is part of the sacrifice, which is a part of the progression.
But most importantly: sacrifice versus investment. This is an investment in yourself. So as I dive deeper into this podcast, I don't want you to think about it in terms of a sacrifice. Start thinking about it in terms of an investment into you, into what you want, and into the goals that you want to accomplish. It is all of that. It's not a sacrifice. Because how you speak to yourself is how you act.
So that verbiage, sacrifice. If you think, "Oh my God, this is so hard to do. I'm going to get up at 5 a.m. This sucks." And you allow everybody around you to say, "Why are you eating that way? You're sacrificing eating this way," blah, blah, blah. That verbiage, sacrifice, could actually be making it harder for you to do the things than it really is, just by you mentally thinking that way and using that type of language. If you're like, "Oh my God, I'm sacrificing my sleep because I'm waking up at 5 a.m.," it's actually going to be harder for you to do it than it really is, because you're mentally thinking that way and you're using that type of language. "Oh, I have to pack my meals. I have to track my food. I'm sacrificing this delicious food because I need to eat the chicken to get my protein." I'm adding tonality there, but you're making it harder than what it actually is just by mentally thinking that it fucking sucks and using that language, right?
When you think you're sacrificing going out with your friends, you aren't sacrificing it. You're making an investment into your future self. You just haven't seen the payoff yet. And guys, I am speaking so much from experience here, because at the beginning of my journey, I chose not to go out with my friends. I chose to say no to going out and having a couple of drinks. I chose to have a night in and wake up more clear-minded the next day, where a lot of people think, "Oh, you're sacrificing your friend time, spending time with your friends, to go out and do this thing." It's like, no, I'm not sacrificing that. I'm not sacrificing it, but I don't want to feel groggy the next day. I don't want to feel foggy.
And now, at age 32, it's like, man, it takes me weeks to recover from a night out of a couple of drinks, right? So I don't want to sacrifice two weeks of recovery from just a couple of drinks one night, when I want to be able to wake up the next day clear-minded and go crush a workout, plan my meals, hit my meals, hit my nutritional needs. Alcohol is going to make me want to just snack on shit, right? It's going to make me sleep in. It's going to make me feel like absolute shit mentally. I don't want that. I want to not have two weeks of recovery. I want to be ahead of everybody else by two weeks, right? I want to wake up ready to rock and roll and be clear-minded for those two weeks. So I'm not sacrificing going out with my friends. I'm making an investment in my future self.
And I'm saying that you guys haven't seen the payoff yet because you haven't seen the results from doing that, right? You need to understand that you need to fall in love with delayed gratification, because by saying no, you're not going to get instant results the next day. But by saying no consistently over time, and you don't have to say no every time, but you say no the majority of the time, it's going to have a compound effect. Delayed gratification. It's going to show up in months to come and years to come.
Hey, hey, I just want to drop a huge appreciation to you guys listening to this show. It means a lot. I hope you guys are enjoying it, and there's so much more to come. If you are enjoying it, hit the subscribe button. I'd appreciate that tons. It would also help this podcast reach others who need to hear these messages too. Thanks so much, guys. Let's get back to the show.
The investment in your future is getting something in return. That's not a sacrifice. So when you miss a night out to work out or just to stay in, like I just explained, you're not sacrificing a night out. You're making an investment into your future self. And that investment is going to create a better body. It's going to give you way more confidence, right? The more that you say no, the more confidence it gives you to know that you can say no again.
And the people that don't support you in this transition, as you're trying to get after new goals for yourself and new habits and embed more supportive habits into your journey, just put them at a distance. You don't have to say, "Oh, I can't be your friend anymore." It's like, okay, I'm sensing that this person has opinion after opinion after opinion, and they're not supportive opinions. It's not, "Yeah, girl, go get it, crush it. I'm rooting you on." It's, "Why are you doing that? Come on, you don't have to do that. Don't go to the gym today." It's like, okay, I'm just going to place you at a distance, because I want to do all of these things. You're doing it for you. Remember that. And that's all you need to do.
Or if it's more immediate people in your family, sit down with them and have a straight-up conversation. Communicate with them. Make them understand. If you say that you're doing this for you and you want to feel more confident and better in your own skin, and my eyes are wide to the camera right now, if somebody disagrees with that and doesn't want you to do that, bye to them. But with straight-up communication like that, if you have a loving, supportive partner, a loving, supportive family, they should understand that this is what you want to do. And they should just pump the brakes on the negativity and all the opinions they're throwing at you. That's only coming from their mental sphere. Remember that. It's making them uncomfortable. They're like, "Damn, she's getting after it. Maybe I should get after it."
So just know that. Push some people away if you can. You don't have to stop being friends with them. Just put them at a distance. Anybody in your immediate family, sit down and have a conversation with them. You're doing this for you. If they're supportive of you, they're going to understand. You just have to communicate. You don't feel comfortable in your own skin, so you want to make this happen for yourself, right?
And by doing that, you're going to create a better body. You're going to get the results that you want. And you're going to have way more confidence in yourself by knowing that you're not sacrificing a night out, by having clear communication, by pushing some people out to a distance. You're doing this all for you. Okay. So don't look at it as if you're sacrificing something. You're totally making an investment into your future self.
For me, for example, I just shared that story with you, but I know when I'm skipping something that's fun to do something that's hard, there's a better payoff coming later on. I'm speaking from experience, you guys, right? Take it from me. Listen to me. Believe me that all of the things that may sound really hard for you to do right now, at the beginning of your journey, because you feel like you're sacrificing your time or sacrificing doing all of this stuff, there's going to be a payoff later. It's coming. You just have to be obsessed with delayed gratification. Okay. You're not skipping things. You're not sacrificing things. The payoff is going to come in the future, as long as you do all of these things and continue to do them for you, in the direction of your goals.
And you need to remember, when you're talking to yourself, if you're constantly looking at everything as a sacrifice, you're always going to feel empty. You're always going to feel like you're doing all of these things for nothing. And that is just so far from the actual truth. If you're constantly like, "Oh, I'm waking up at 5 a.m.," and you're constantly in a state of negativity towards your goals, you're always going to feel empty. You're going to be like, "Why the fuck am I doing this?" You're always going to feel like you're doing all of these things for nothing.
And the truth is, you're doing all of these things for something: for you. It's an investment in you. It's an investment in your confidence, an investment in your body, an investment in your health and an investment in your relationships. All of these things. Thinking like this is going to be way more fulfilling when you know that you're getting up in the morning to do this work because it's going to get you this payoff later. And when you understand that, it becomes so much easier for you to do. So much easier for you to do, you guys.
But if you think, "Oh, I'm going to miss this because I have to stay on this program," all you're focusing on is what you missed out on, or what you're giving up. And if you only focus on that, you're going to become obsessed with what you're giving up. And this is where you're going to break. This is where you're going to give up. This is why you constantly keep giving up: because you're focused on the wrong shit. You're focused on the wrong crap. "Oh, I have to stay on this program, so I can't eat that." No, man, you're just making an investment into your future body and health by choosing better things to eat, right?
It's like, "Oh, I missed out on a night out with my friends." You gave yourself the ability to have more clarity. Your body is not in a state of constant stress. Your body is fine to go the next day, to work out and to crush it. You have mental clarity, all of those things. So you're not missing out. Stop focusing on, "Oh my God, I'm giving up this," or "I missed out on this," or "I'm going to miss this." You're focused on the wrong shit. That's what you're focused on, right?
And many people just starting off really struggle. You may struggle with this mentality, and I understand that, because at this point in your journey you may not have accomplished that big goal or that fat loss just yet to believe that the payoff is really coming. And that's why I'm sharing my personal experience with you guys. I am on the other side of this. I have dealt with all of this controversy. I've dealt with being judged. I've dealt with being hated. I've dealt with losing friends. I've dealt with opinion after opinion after opinion from both friends and family. People had all of these things to say. I'm like, "Yo, peeps, I'm going to do this for me. I don't care what you think." And that's the type of mentality you have to have, right? You have to have it.
But I get why it may be a struggle for you to mentally accept that at the beginning, because at this point in your journey you haven't really accomplished that big goal yet. You haven't seen the payoff yet. But trust me, it's coming, right?
And that's why it's so important to either have a coach that you're working with, or to continue to listen to me here on this podcast, as someone to look up to who has already accomplished what you want. That alone, guys, either having a coach or just continuing to listen to me here, is so unbelievably valuable. I am on the other side of things. I'm telling you guys what you need to be doing in terms of standing up for yourself, believing in yourself, having confidence in yourself, making the investment in yourself. This is all shit that I had to do. And I get that it's hard at the beginning, but I promise you there's a payoff.
So listening to everything I'm sharing here on all the podcasts, all the nutritional tips, all the workout tips, right? It's things that I've done. And that is so unbelievably valuable, especially because, one, it's free. And two, you get to go and take action on everything that I'm sharing with you here. And I hope you do. That is the main point of this podcast. I'm sharing tips, tricks, tactics, methodologies, everything here. I just ask you to go and apply it, please, because that's what's going to generate the results. And I want to give as many women as possible the results that I have experienced for myself, and also the results that 10,000-plus women inside of WarriorBabe have experienced for themselves.
Guys, I'll tell you, myself and our WarriorBabe coaches, we are living, breathing, walking products of this lifestyle. One of our core values at WarriorBabe is to walk the talk, to be disciplined, to be aware that how you show up for yourself is a direct reflection of how clients will show up for you. So if the coaches on our team weren't following this value the majority of the time, they wouldn't, or shouldn't, even be on our team, right? Because you want what you're hearing that this coach has, right? And so if you do X, which is hearing what they're doing and listening to what they're doing, or to what I'm telling you guys to do, you will get Y, which is the result that they have too, which is what you want in return. Okay?
So pay attention to what someone who has the results you want does, make the investments that they are making, and trust that the payoff is coming your way. That's really the takeaway from this whole podcast. You're not sacrificing shit. You're making an investment into your future self.
And guys, to wrap it all up, with this mental shift you'll develop way more positive momentum at such a faster rate. If you just stay in your bubble, knowing that all of the things you're doing are going to produce positive outcomes for the results you want to see, then you're going to have positive momentum along your journey and you're going to get results at such a faster rate. But by allowing people to pop that bubble, or penetrate that electric force field around you, you're just going to delay and delay and delay and delay. You're going to have momentum and then it's going to stop. And you're going to have momentum and it's going to stop. And it's going to take you so much longer to get where you want to get to.
So have confidence in yourself, believe in yourself, stay strong in your journey, and just push out the negativity as much as you possibly can. And stay in alignment with knowing that everything you are doing is an investment into your future self, into the body that you want to have and the continued confidence that you're going to build from doing that.
All right, guys, I hope you enjoyed this one. I'll catch you next time.
Real quick: the only ask I could ever have of you guys is to help spread the word so we can help more women lose body fat, build muscle, reach their goals and feel insanely confident. And the only way we can do that is if you rate, review and share this podcast. So the single thing I ask you to do is leave a review. It will take you 10 seconds, and it will mean the absolute world to me and may change the world of someone else.
