How long should meal prep take?
Answered by Nikkiey Stott and her guests · Updated
The short answer
Meal prep should take about 30 minutes to an hour, according to Nikkiey, and under 45 minutes to an hour even when you're cooking for a family. It should not take two or three hours. At first she suggests blocking one to two hours, because it gets faster each time you repeat it.

The full answer
Nikkiey's numbers shift slightly depending on where you are. On Ep. 42 she says you should be able to lock yourself in the kitchen for 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how many people you're cooking for, and she cooked a full week of her own food in under an hour. On Ep. 195, which is aimed at beginners, she recommends setting aside one to two hours on your chosen day. She explains that it took her longer at the start, and only with repetition can she now do it in 30 minutes or less. So if you're new, give yourself the bigger window. That doesn't mean you're slow. You're still learning the routine.
The fastest version is the simplest. On Ep. 69, Nikkiey says she preps only her proteins, which takes her maybe 25 minutes: chicken in the pressure cooker and ground beef on the stove for about 15 minutes. Brown rice, oatmeal and tortillas come ready from a bag.
If your prep runs much longer, the plan usually needs fixing. On Ep. 42 Nikkiey points to a few common causes:
- Doing one thing at a time instead of running the oven, stovetop and pressure cooker together.
- Getting distracted by your phone, a TV show or other things in the house.
- Choosing fancy recipes with lots of chopping. That can add time, but she says it still shouldn't take two hours.
Her fix is to strategize, prioritize and act. Put prep on your calendar, have your groceries ready, get all the proteins cooking first, and stay focused until you're done. On Ep. 195 she also suggests making it enjoyable with music or a podcast, and keeping in mind how much time and decision-making it saves you during the week.

How do I meal prep when I cook for my family?
You don't need separate meals. Nikkiey recommends cooking modular components, a protein, a carb and a vegetable, in one session. Everyone builds their own plate, and you build yours heavy on protein and vegetables. Your family adds butter, cheese or sauces, and you adjust your portions and sauce choices to fit your macros.

Should I eat before a morning workout?
Yes. On The WarriorBabe Show, Nikkiey says to eat something before you lift, however early. A small protein-and-carb snack is enough, like a banana and a protein shake. Dr. Stacy Sims suggests about 15g protein and 30g carbs. Then have a real breakfast with protein and carbs 30 to 45 minutes after training.

How soon after a workout do I need to eat?
You don't need to rush a shake within 30 minutes. On Ep. 364, Nikkiey explains that the post-workout window is real but wider than people think, with muscle protein synthesis elevated for up to 24 to 48 hours. She recommends a protein-containing meal within about an hour to an hour and a half after training, and never four hours later.
