How do I lose belly fat after 40?

Answered by Nikkiey Stott and her guests · Updated

The short answer

Build muscle and fix your nutrition instead of adding crunches, cardio or cutting food further. Nikkiey explains belly fat can't be spot-reduced; it comes off through a calorie deficit across your whole body. Her priorities: progressive strength training, enough protein, sleep, stress management and less alcohol, plus patience, because the midsection often leans out last.

The full answer

Start by dropping what isn't working. On Ep. 13, Nikkiey is blunt: crunches can strengthen your abs, but they won't burn the fat sitting on top of them, and where your body loses fat is largely set by genetics and hormones. On Ep. 294 she explains why piling on cardio in a deficit can backfire. Your body may break down muscle for fuel, cortisol can rise, and your metabolism adapts so you burn fewer calories for the same work. In her view, losing muscle leads to gaining fat, especially in the belly.

What she recommends instead:

  • Strength training. On Ep. 401 she calls progressive overload training with compound movements the most powerful intervention for visceral fat, and says it can reduce that fat even when the scale doesn't move.
  • Protein. On Ep. 174 she says the fix for a stubborn pooch is not more running or leg raises but eating more protein, noting how many women eat only 20 to 40 grams a day.
  • Sleep, stress management and less alcohol, which round out her list on Ep. 401.

The episodes differ in emphasis. Ep. 174 says nutrition is king and exercise is queen, while Ep. 401 says to get in the gym first and not worry about a diet. Both land in the same place: protect and build muscle, and feed it.

Then give it time. On Ep. 186, Nikkiey points out that years of chronic stress and eating a certain way don't reverse overnight. You may see your face, arms and legs lean out before your midsection does, and with consistency it follows. Ep. 401 suggests a DEXA scan if you want to know your numbers. If you suspect hormone or thyroid shifts, Ep. 294 encourages getting checked and advocating for yourself, so work with your doctor. And on Ep. 357, client Erin, 52, describes eating 2,000 calories and training four days a week for about 40 minutes, and calls the idea that menopause belly must be accepted a bunch of BS.

How many steps a day should I walk to lose fat?

Nikkiey recommends 8,000 to 12,000 steps a day for fat loss, and says it doesn't have to be exactly 10,000. If you're well below that now, build up gradually, adding 1,000 to 2,000 steps a week, instead of jumping straight to the target. Walking works best alongside strength training and the right nutrition.

Is too much cardio bad for women over 40?

Cardio itself isn't bad after 40, Nikkiey says, but too much of it becomes a problem when it's your main fat loss tool, especially without enough food, recovery and strength training. Then it can stress your body, cost you muscle and slow your metabolism. Use it as a supplement, not the star of the show.

  • Fat Loss After 40

Why can't I lose weight after 40 even though I eat less and exercise more?

Nikkiey's answer: your body after 40 doesn't respond to restriction the way it did at 25. Eating less and doing more signals stress, so your body lowers your metabolic rate, raises cortisol, breaks down muscle and holds on to fat. The fix she teaches is more food, more protein, strength training and recovery, not further cuts.
